Houston County is named for Samuel
Houston, one of the most important figures in the history of Texas,
president of the Republic of Texas and Governor of Texas. Its county
seat is Crockett. It was the first county established by the
Republic of Texas |
|
The area now known as Houston County
was also a stronghold of the Alabama-Coushatta, Cherokee, and Tejas
Indians. In 1860, on the eve of the Civil War, Houston County
had a population of 8,058, including 2,819 slaves. |
 |
|
The Civil War and its aftermath
brought profound changes to the county. Its citizens voted
overwhelmingly for secession. Although Houston County
witnessed little of the violence that many other counties
experienced during Reconstruction, the effects of the war were felt
for some time, and the economy did not begin fully to recover until
1872, when the Houston and Great Northern Railroad was built through
the county. |
