Hartley County, Texas News

Channing, Hartley Co., Tex-, March 19.— Quo warranto proceedings with injunction was filed in the district court of Oldham county today against Hartley county and her newly elected officials, having for its object the disorganization of the county. Among other things the petition alleges: That the order for the organization was illegally and fraudulently obtained from the commissioners court of Oldham county upon presentation to said court of a petition containing the names of 304 pretended voters of Hartley county; that of this number 177 were never seen nor heard of in said county; that at the time the petition was presented there were only 65 legal voters in the county; that the election of county officers and county site, held on Feb. 5, 1891, is void: that the organization of said county of Hartley was brought about by parties interested in a town lot scheme in the town of Hartley, who conspired together to effect the organization of the county and the selection of the town of Hartley as the county site that they might unload their property at advanced prices. The injunction granted restrans Hartley and her officers her officers: 1. From collecting any taxes for the county. 2. From selling or otherwise disposing or any county property. 3. From removing the records of Hartley county from Oldham county. 4. From collecting any funds of Hartley county now in the hands of the state treasurer. This suit, since within the last few days, when It became pretty generally known that it would be filed, has proven a most sensational topic with the average citizen of this county. Channing has just close a contract with par- ties to sink additional wells and lay the necessary piping to give the town an effectual system of waterworks. March 21, 1891 Dallas Morning News

Hartley, Hartley Co., Tex., Hartley is  awaking from her lethargy. A rousing meeting was held here this afternoon in the interest of immigration, which showed the old time harmonious spirit. The meeting was a mass contention to select delegates to the panhandle immigration convention at Wichita Falls on the 23d, and the following gentlemen were chosen to represent this county: H. E. Green, H. S. Manuel, W. C. Collins Gill Baldwin, Ben Dawson, C. F. Champion, C. F. Rudolph, S. R. Shepherd. F. Lusby, A. G. Hall, S. L. Mettler, L E. Hasly, J. R. Jenkins J. A. T. Todd and P. McCormick. Resolution were adopted expressing a sense of the importance of securing immigration, the willingness of' this county to co-operate with the movement and the grateful appreciation in which this meeting holds the Fort Worth and Denver Oil/ railway for its enterprise in initiating the movement and its kindness in furnishing transportation. The convention then went into permanent organization of the Hartley county immigration association and elected as officer: C. F. Rudolph, president; Ben Lawson, vice president, and Dr. J. F- Grant, secretary-treasurer, and determined upon -vigorous and aggressive immigration work for the spring and summer. We have great hopes of filling up our fertile and tree' lands around Hartley with farmers. M?- H. Humphrey,* merchant of Channing, Hartley county, has bought out the stock of general merchandise here of Collins & Baldwin, and will at once move his own stock here and consolidate the two stores, thus fully doubling the mercantile interests of Hartley. The wheat around Hartley, of which there are between 1000 and 2000 acres in this season, is looking remarkably fine. It is thought there will be about 1000 acres  broom corn putted in the vicinity this spring, which is believed to be peculiarly adapted to this country and extremely profitable. The people of Hartley County are confident that the opening will be one of great local development and prosperity. February 19, 1893 Dallas Morning News

Whether or not he left town I do not know of my own knowledge. The man who killed the foreman of the grand jury was not captured. A deplorable state of affairs in Hartley County/ Two County judges have been removed by a District Judge and things are liable to break out in another row any time. The whole affair grows out of a faction fight which has been prevailing for some time. All this happened about a week ago, I don't remember the exact day. July 9, 1892 Dallas Morning News
