Ethelyne Baxter

Ethelyne Ribble Baxter, 84, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997.Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Scott, vicar of St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church, and Cottie Tarbet of Shamrock officiating. Burial will be in Shamrock Cemetery by Wright Funeral Directors.Mrs. Baxter was born near Blanket and moved to the Shamrock area in 1928. She married Robert Lee Baxter Jr. in 1933 at Shamrock. They farmed and ranched near the Dozier community for many years.She was preceded in death by her husband in 1973; a son, Robert Lee Baxter III, in 1984; and an infant son.She owned and operated Wheeler County Credit Bureau for many years and was active with many organizations in the Samnorwood school system. She was a member of the Church of Christ and the 1935 Forum Club. Jerry Leroy Berten

Jerry Leroy Berten, 68, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997.Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Cole, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Shamrock Cemetery by Wright Funeral Directors.Mr. Berten was born in Shamrock and graduated from Shamrock High School in 1947. He attended San Marcos Military Academy in San Marcos and also Southwestern University of Oklahoma at Weatherford, Okla.He served in the Air Force during the Korean War with the 6174th Tactical Con. Group. He managed the Laddie's Store in Shamrock with his mother from 1960 to 1985.Mr. Berten served with the Wheeler and Shamrock fire departments for more than 40 years. He served many years as the Wheeler County Defense Coordinator and Red Cross Disaster Chairman for the Panhandle District. He was past president of the Panhandle Firemen and Fire Marshall's Association and of the Shamrock Ex-Student's Association.He served two terms on the Shamrock City Council and was a past general chairman of the St. Patrick's Association. He was a member of the American Legion Deshazo George Post No. 68 for more than 40 years and had served in most offices. He served many years with Clay Funeral Home Ambulance Service and the Wheeler County Ambulance Service. He had been a member of First Baptist Church since the early 1960s.Mr. Berten married Mary Charles Nunn in 1964 at Shamrock.Survivors include his wife; a son, David Berten of Shamrock; and his mother, Lena Berten of Shamrock.The family requests memorials be to the Shamrock Volunteer Fire Department or the Wheeler Volunteer Fire Department.

James Andrew Blakemore

James Andrew Blakemore, 71, died Saturday, Feb., 1, 1997.Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe G. Jernigan, pastor of Calvary Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Shamrock Cemetery by Wright Funeral Directors.Mr. Blakemore was born in Crowell and had lived in Shamrock since 1941. He had served in the Army during World War II in the 81st Field Artillery Division. After his discharge, he went into business with his family and they owned two truck stops on Route 66: Davis Bumper to Bumper and Blakemore Super Service. They later purchased Montgomery Chevrolet and operated it as Blakemore Chevrolet for more than 20 years.He was a member of First Baptist Church, a 50-year member of the Deshazo George Post of the American Legion and a committeeman of the Adobe Walls Council of Boy Scouts for many years. He also served as the president of the Shamrock Chamber of Commerce.He married June Vearner in 1947 at Shamrock.Survivors include his wife; a son, Richard Dale Blakemore of Shamrock; a daughter, Gloria Dannette Blakemore of Shamrock; a grandson; and a granddaughter.The family requests memorials be to American Cancer Society.Amarillo News-Globe Feb. 2, 1997

Ronnie Clyde Bohler

Ronnie Clyde Bohler, 56, died Tuesday, May 27, 1997.Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Shamrock Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church of Shamrock with the Rev. Jack Lee, minister, officiating. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Directors.Mr. Bohler was born in Shamrock and had lived in Shamrock all of his life. He served in the Army during peacetime. He worked for many years in and around Shamrock in the stucco and insulation business. He was a member of First Baptist Church.He married Loretta Jean Bohler in 1965 at Odessa. Armell Holt Brown, 68, died Sunday, June 15, 1997.Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Wheeler.Mrs. Brown was born in Wheeler. She was a graduate of Shamrock High School. She was a member of First Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir and a former member of the Thursday Review Club.She married R.J. Holt Jr. in 1947 at Wheeler. He died in 1969.She moved to Dallas in 1975 and worked for MBank for 10 years. She then married Charles R. G.L. "Bo" Childress, 71, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000.Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church in Wheeler. Burial will be at Zybach Cemetery with arrangements by Wright Funeral Home of Wheeler.Mr. Childress was born in Wheeler. He was a truck driver for the Associated Milk Producers Co. He lived in Laverne, Okla., and moved back to Wheeler in 1982. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a former member of the Wheeler Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Wheeler.He married Martha Lou Markham in 1961 in Shamrock.He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Remy, in 1998.Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kelly Childress of Wakita, Okla., and Samuel Childress of Mobeetie, Texas; two daughters, Lynette Davis of Oklahoma City and Misty Brown of Wheeler; three brothers, L.D. Oden Lester Hudson

Oden Lester Hudson, 80, died Monday, March 10, 1997.Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Wheeler Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Dyer, pastor of the Maranatha Church at Briscoe, officiating. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.Mr. Hudson was a longtime resident of Briscoe. He was born in Childress County, and his family moved to Wheeler in 1925. He married Lois Vaughn in 1933 at Wheeler. He was a self-employed trucking transporter all his life. He was a Methodist and member of the Moose Lodge at Pampa. Robert Field, retired Baptist minister from Amarillo, officiating. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.Mrs. Jenkins was born in Dericks, Ark. She was a longtime resident of Canadian and Amarillo. She managed restaurants. She was a Baptist.She married Jack Roland Turner. He died in 1932. She married Roy Jenkins in 1944. He died in 1951. She also was preceded in death by a son, Harlon Turner, in 1994.Survivors include a son, J.B. John Allen Neece

John Allen Neece, 89, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 1997.Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Church of Christ with Chris Swinford, minister from Portales, N.M., and Cottie Tarbet of Shamrock officiating. Burial will be in Mobeetie Cemetery at Mobeetie by Wright Funeral Directors.Mr. Neece was born in Chillicothe and moved to Shamrock in 1954. He married Rosamond McCollum in 1935 at Sterling City. He was a teacher for the Shamrock ISD for 20 years and was a principal at the Mobeetie ISD for 10 years before retiring. He died in 1991.She had lived in Wheeler County all her life and farmed and ranched there. She also was a waitress at Walls Cafe and the Western Motel before retiring. He was a longtime resident of Springer, N.M., before moving to Wheeler two months ago.He was a rancher and also was involved in construction. Doris Ann Rusk, 88, died Friday, June 27, 1997.A private family service will be held at a later date. She had been a resident of Wheeler for 17 years, moving from Amarillo, where she had lived for 60 years. She was a music teacher and a homemaker. She was a member of the Texas Music Teachers Association and First Christian Church in Amarillo.She married Paul Clifton Rusk in 1926 at Pampa. Berniece Stevens Hall, 73, died Sunday, July 13, 1997.Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with Bill Morrison, minister of Wheeler Church of Christ, and the Rev. Rob Lindley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home.Mrs. Hall was born in Shamrock and had lived in Wheeler County all of her life. She graduated from Shamrock High School and attended Stephen F. Austin and Sul Ross University.She was named Wheeler's Woman of the Year in 1974. She was a member and past president of the Wednesday Study Club, Thursday Review Club, Wheeler Bicentennial Committee, Wheeler City Council and Wheeler PTA.Mrs. Hall was the first woman president of the Wheeler Chamber of Commerce and also served on the Wheeler Library Board and the American Cancer Society.She was an active member of the Wheeler Tax Appraisal Board, Wheeler Historical Society, Shamrock Ex-Student Association, Shamrock Tuesday Bridge Club, Wheeler Couples Bridge Club, Wheeler Ladies Bridge Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Sonna Murry Endsley, 54, died Sunday, June 29, 1997.Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Glenn Davis Memorial Methodist Church at Dozier with the Rev. Lawrence Thompson of Shamrock officiating. Burial will be in Dozier Cemetery by Wright Funeral Directors.Ms. Endsley was born in Shamrock and had lived in the Dozier community most of her life. She graduated from Samnorwood High School and worked as an LVN in Fort Worth. James Clifton "Jim'' Walker Sr., 53, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, in Amarillo.Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. James McGhee, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Zybach Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home.Mr. Walker was born in Monterey Park, Calif., and had lived in Wheeler County all of his life. He was a truck driver, a heavy equipment operator and a rancher. Forace B. Evans, 86, died Monday, June 30, 1997.Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church of Wheeler with the Rev. Ronnie Chadwick of First Baptist Church of Davidson, Okla., and the Rev. Rob Lindley of First United Methodist Church of Wheeler officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home.Mr. Evans was born in the Kelton community of Wheeler County. He had been a lifelong resident of Wheeler County.He married Newasa Lahoma Hays in 1935 at Wheeler. She died in 1970. He also was preceded in death by a son, Forace Dewayne Evans, in 1966.Mr. Evans was an engineer for the Texas Highway Department from 1950 until retiring in 1974. Ida Caddell Farmer

Ida Caddell Farmer, 88, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 1997, in Midland.Services will be at 2 p.m. in Wheeler First Baptist Church with the Rev. Toby Henson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home of Wheeler.Mrs. Farmer was born in Denton County. She attended school in Aubrey and graduated from Denton High School. She went to college at North Texas State Teachers College where she received her first teacher certification. She came to Wheeler County in 1928 to teach at Corn Valley School. She married Elvis E. "Ebb'' Farmer in 1932 at Wheeler. He died in 1967.Mrs. Farmer also graduated for West Texas College in 1948 and taught in the Wheeler schools until retiring in 1974. She moved to Midland in 1985. She was a member the Retired Teachers Association, First Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star and the '54 Study Club.Survivors include a son, Glen Farmer of Midland; two brothers, Vernon L. Caddell of Dallas and Curtis Macon Caddell of Granbury; four grandsons; and 10 great-grandchildren.The family requests memorials be to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch or a favorite charity. Ernest C. "Shorty'' Gordon, 89, died, Sunday, Aug. 10, 1997.Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church of Mobeetie with the Rev. Gary Jahnel, pastor, officiating. Gilbert Hampton

Gilbert Hampton, 85, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997.Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Church of the Nazarene with Kerry Moore officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Wellington by Wright Funeral Home.Mr. Hampton was born in Meridian, Okla., and raised in Wheeler County. He was a dock foreman for Borden's Milk Co. He also was a farmer. He served in Korea with the Army.He married Loretta Irene Hazard in 1935 at Claude. She died in 1943. He married Edna Pruitt in 1949 at Pampa. They moved to Lubbock in 1949 and lived there until moving to White Deer in 1960.While living in White Deer, Mr. Hampton was active in senior citizens' activities. In 1990, he moved from White Deer to Longview and lived there until returning to Wheeler in 1995.He was a Baptist.Survivors include three daughters, Linda Hampton Buttry of South El Monte, Calif., Karen Hampton Power of Longview and Kay Hampton Chowning of Lubbock; two sisters, Opal Hampton Plemmons of Carrollton and Vera Hampton Brickey of Wheeler; a brother, J.C. Nellie M. Horton, 91, died Monday, July 21, 1997.Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday in Wheeler Cemetery with the Rev. Toby Henson, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are Wright Funeral Home.Mrs. Horton was born near Mangum, Okla. She married Dewey Logan Horton in 1938 at Wellington. Ethel N. Loter, 82, died Friday, July 18, 1997, in Corpus Christi.Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rob Lindley, pastor, officiating. Private burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home.Mrs. Loter was born in Throckmorton County and graduated from Throckmorton High School. She married Charles E. Loter in 1941 at Alpine. They moved to Wheeler from Fort Davis. They lived in Wheeler until 1988, when they moved to Corpus Christi.Mrs. Loter was a clerk for McIlhaney's Dry Goods for many years. She was a member and past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Wheeler First United Methodist Church and a teacher of the Friendship Sunday School Class. She had an associate membership at Wesley United Methodist Church Corpus Christi.Mr. Loter died in 1991.Survivors include a son, Dr. Joe C. Laura Rachel Whiteley

Laura Rachel Whiteley, 91, of Alamogordo, N.M., a former Wheeler resident, died Thursday, May 1, 1997.Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Wheeler Church of Christ with Bill Morrison, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Kelton Cemetery by Wright Funeral Home.Mrs. Whiteley was born in Johnson County, Ark. She married Charley Whiteley in 1928 at Shamrock. They lived in Wheeler County for 55 years. Mr. Whiteley died in 1983.Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Whiteley moved to Alamogordo and had lived there for the past 14 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Wheeler Church of Christ.Survivors include a son, Kenneth Whiteley of Hurst; a daughter, Reba Smith of Alamogordo; a brother, A.E. Carothers of St. Louis; a sister, Sarah Knight of Cabot, Ark.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
