EXTRA! GOVERNOR IS HANGED IN EFFIGY
-- Report From New Boston says Figure of Chief Executive was Suspended From a Wire There Last Night and an Insulting
Placard Attached Grows out of the Hanging of Shutt
-- Execution last week causes after excitement that may result in serious trouble between factions on both sides
of the case.
TEXARKANA, Texas , June 3 - Word has just reached here of a sentence that has stirred the community in the vicinity of New Boston, Bowie County, to the highest pitch of excitement. It is reported that a mob congregated near the depot in New Boston last night and hanged in effigy, figures representing Governor Lanham, District Attorney R. D. Hart, District Judge J. M. Talbot and County Attorney Horace Vaughn. According to the report, a wire was strung from the depot to a telegraph pole, and the four figures were suspended therefrom. A placard on the figure of Governor Lanham bore the words: GOVERNOR LANHA, WHO PARDONS RAPISTS AND WHO WOULD NOT COMMUTE THE SENTENCE OF ED SHUTT.
On Judge Tablot's figure were the words: I'M LITTLE JIMMY TALBOT.
Considerable feelings exists in Bowie county over
the hanging of the aged Ed Shutt last Friday, and trouble between the friends of both sides may result.
