Sheriff Sneed of Hill County was killed recently.

More arrests. Marshall Browning, assistant of the military, arrested two men, John Talbott and James Stevenson, in this county last week, who are charged with complicity to the murder of some negroes and U.S. Soldiers. Stevenson was badly wounded and surrendered. They were taken to Brenham [Washington Co] and placed under guard on the Federal camps.

[Note: Waller County was organized in April 1873 from portions of Austin and Grimes County; Hempstead then became the county seat.]

NOTICE. The public are hereby cautioned against buying, bargaining, or trading for a note of one thousand dollars, held against me by Col. Jared Groce, as I have just claims against that gentleman. TWO MURDERERS STRANGLED
Brenham, Texas, March 18 - Clem Strauthers, who murdered Louis Peter last November, and Buck Chappell, who murdered Mrs. Dora Emshoff, December 18, 1895 were both hanged at Bellville today. Mr. and Mrs. Fenton Schweke spent Sunday at Fayetteville ,guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ad. Krueger.

Miss Jewel Mitchell left Monday for her home in San Antonio after a visit to friends and relatives here.

Miaa Hilda Rudloff returned Sunday from a two months' stay with her brother, Paul Rudloff, and family at Bellville.

 Rev. and Mrs. Gus Ezillat and daughter, Miss Stella, were here en route to their home in Freisburg, after a several days' stay in Brenham.
 Mr and Mrs. F. V. Lesikar and Mrs. J J. Finka and Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Kroulik of Shiner motored to Wesley last week for a visit to relatives.
 Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Aurich and children and Mr. and Mrs. A, F. Bartay and two sons and daughter attended the Malfast at Bellville Wednesday.

Died: At Flatonia Texas, February 17, 1888, Wm. Fortran, eldest brother of Mrs. M.A. Healy, of this city.  The deceased was born and raised in Austin County Texas, but had resided at Flatonia for the past 13 years.  He leaves a son and five daughters, an aged father, and many relatives to mourn his untimely death[Transcribed by: Melody Beery]
