Description: School Superintendent Killed

Bastrop, Texas, Feb. 1.--Col. J. D. C. Edmonds, superintendent of public schools of this city, was shot and killed here today. R. A. Brooks, attorney and assistant postmaster, was arrested, charged with the killing.

Description: Obituary Will Bell

Date: February 9 1889

In the death of Mr. Wm. Bell, which occurred in Bastrop on the night of Jan. 27, the county has lost one whose genial manners and honorable character had endeared him to a large circle of friends. He was sheriff of the county for several years, then served as deputy to United States Marshal Rankin at San Antonio, till failing health necessitated his resignation.

Description: Sentenced to Be Hanged

Date: October 24 1879 Bastrop, Oct. 23.--The trial of S. S. Howard for the murder of his brother-in-law, Alex. Farmer, was called yesterday. A great multitude of witnesses was examined during the day and argument commenced after supper. Congressman Jones and lieutenant-governor Sayers  prosecuted, and Hon. Seth Shepard defended the accused. The argument was opened by Jones and closed by Sayers. The jury, after being out all night, returned a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree and punishment was fixed at death. In the trial of Howard at the last term of the district court the jury failed to agree, eleven being for hanging and one for sending to the penitentiary for life.

Hanged for Wife Murder

Life Curiously Prolonged After the Drop Fell

Bastrop, Texas, July 29 – Alexander Brown was hanged here yesterday for wife murder. He made a full confession on the gallows. Wednesday night he cut his throat, severing the windpipe, which prolonged his life after the drop, air getting into his lungs. ( July 30, 1893, page 2, transcribed by Peggy Thompson)

FARMER KILLED BY FALLING INTO WELL.

SMITHVILLE, Bastrop Co.. Texas, Aug. 28.—F. A. Rosankey a farmer 57 years old, was killed
Sunday on his farm in Crafts Prairie, near here,, by falling into a well. He died a few minutes after being rescued by his brother and others who came to his aid at once. He leaves a wife and several children. Funeral services and burial were held in the Upton Cemetery Monday. [Contributed by Janice Rice]

LOCKHART,.Texas. June 23.— Orrin Crippen. born in New York  City_in 1826 died at his home near Upton In Bastrop County Wednesday—and will be buried in the Young Cemetery in Bastrop CountyThursday. Mr. Crippen was a member of the convention that organized Caldwell County in 1848. He was a veteran of the Mexican War and served with distinction in both that war and the war between the states. He was married in 1852. six children survive: Mrs. Lizzie Sanders, Wichita Fails; Sarah Quinton, Gonzales; W.  P. Crippen. Lockhart; Mrs. Susan Hocutt, Smithville; Mrs. Ellen Gilliland. Bateman, and S. L. Crippen, Smithville. He has twenty-nine grandchildren, seventy great-grandchildren and twenty great-great-grandchildren. It is said that Mr Crippen attributed his long life to more than seventy-five years he slept on the front porch of his home winter and summer.   [Contributed by Janice Rice]
