McKinney, April 23.--John L. Lovejoy, aged 72, died suddenly at his home late Saturday.

He was born in Collin County. He was president of the First National Bank of McKinney and interested in numerous business enterprises. He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. C. G. Comegys, the latter's husband being active vice president of the First National Bank.

Lovejoy and Col. J. L. Doggett, who also died this afternoon, had lived within a block of each other, and were neighbors for nearly half a century. Mrs. Lovejoy had been in attendance at the recent Federated Women's Clubs of the Second District of Texas at Benham and arrived home only a few minutes before the death of her husband.

Doggett had served several terms as Mayor of McKinney, was internal revenue collector for North Texas under President Cleveland, and was one time flotortal representative from Collin and Denton Counties.

At the time of his heath he was president of the Collin County Bar Association and president of the Collin County Picnic Association. He was the father of Edwin Doggett, well known business man of Dallas.

Mr. Downing of Bosque County, Collector of the U.S. Direct Tax, for Dallas, Collin, Grayson, Cook, Denton and Tarrant Counties, arrived at this place on Thursday last and will at once commence the assessment of said Tax for the above counties.  He will, we understand, make the assessment for Dallas, Collin and Grayson counties immediately, and commence the Collection as soon as the rolls for these counties are complete, and a Deputy will then visit the other counties of his District and proceed with the assessment in those counties.  Mr. Downing will make his head quarters at this place, and expects “to have his rolls ready for the collection of the Tax in about six weeks, due notice of which will be given through the public prints.

This tax, it will be remembered, is the tax on real estate levied by the United States Government in 1861, and with the interest and charges, we understand, will amount to about 60 cts on each hundred dollars according to the valuation in 1860.

M. C. Portman, one of the old settlers of this section died at his home in Plano Wednesday. Mr. Portman was well known among the older people of the Richardson community, having taught school here in Richardson several years ago. He was 74 years of age at the time of his death, and passed away after several months of failing health. He was a brother-in-law of Virgil Walton. McKinney , Tex. , March 28. – Mrs. Joe D. McKinney died at her home in this city last night and was buried this afternoon at Forest Grove Cemetery . Her husband, a McKinney merchant, and seven children, including one married daughter, Mrs. Hugh McDonald, of Austin , survive. Also two brothers, John Phelps of Bellevue , Clay County , and T. M. Phelps of this county, and five sisters as follows survive: Mrs. R. A. Frazier of Chism, Rockwell County ; Mrs. W. D. Kerby, residing seven miles south of town; Mrs. G. W. Simmons and Mrs. Jake Faulkner of Bellevue, and Mrs. S. S. McIntosh, whose home has been with the deceased. [Transcribed and Submitted by Marla Zwakman]
