Cates Family

My great grandfather U. J. "Riley" Cates arrived in Fannin County, from Mc Minn County TN, either late 1885 or early 1886. He married Addy Callie Watson in Sever Co. TN in December 1885 and started a family in Orangeville, Fannin County, TX late 1886.

Riley Cates moved into Whitewright, Grayson Co., for employment reasons. His earliest known ancestor is John Cate, SR b. 1753 in VA and died in TN about 1800. My direct line is then to his son John Cate Jr., Gideon Cate, Riley Cate (Cates) Charlie Christopher Cates, J. B. Cates (my father). Riley's first wife, Callie born 08/26/1869, died in 1910 of TB and is buried in Porters Cemetery. She is the only Cates buried there. Riley, his second wife, Phoebe Ellis Mayo and other Cates' are buried in Whitewright city Cemetery. My father's parents are Charlie C. Cates and Mattie Skipworth.

Riley and two of his sons, Charlie and Ray Cates, worked for the city of Whitewright. Both are buried with their wives in Whitewright City Cemetery.
