Henderson County was formed April 27, 1846 from parts of Houston and Nacogdoches Counties.

The county seat of Henderson is Athens.
This county is near the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, and is named in honor of James Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of Texas after it became part of the United States.
