A Theatre Wrecked      Terrific Gas Explosion At Corsicana, Texas

Carelessness by a Stage Employee Causes the Loss of Two Lives and Much Damage to Property

Corsicana, Texas, Oct. 10 – At 3:30 yesterday afternoon a terrific explosion occurred in the Merchant’s opera house, where the Devil’s Auction company were preparing to play last night. A force of stage workmen were engaged in readjusting the scenery and otherwise getting the stage in shape, and Harry Cooley, master of transportation and manager of the calcium lights, was testing a cylinder. There arose some doubt as to whether or not it contained black gas, and a bystander suggested that he try it with a match. He struck the match and touched it to the cylinder and the explosion at once followed, wrecking the scenery and tearing out two windows thirty feet distant.

When the scenery was removed and the smoke and gas cleared away, Harry Cooley was found lying in a pool of blood. He was disemboweled and one of his legs blown entirely off.

The following is a list of the killed and injured:
  Harry Cooley, killed.
Walter Moore of Kansas City, property man, Devil’s Auction Company, killed.

Two estimable young ladies of Corsicana, Texas, Misses Sallie and Eva Sherrill, on the 7th went out riding upon two spirited horses.  When returning home, Miss Eva’s horse became frightened and threw her, breaking her neck.  This frightened Miss Sallie’s horse, who also threw her, and, her skirt catching in the horn of the saddle, she was dragged some distance, the horse kicking her in the face, but not fatally.  Mrs. Sherrill, the mother, ran out, and seeing the bodies of her daughters fainted and, temporarily at least, lost her reason.
