MEXICAN SMUGGLES DEAD.
Manuel Barrera Succumbs to his Injuries.
Other Mexicans  Arrested.
Carrizo, Tex., Nov. 8.—Manuel Barrera,one of the Mexican smugglers that was wounded at Realitos, Duval county, a station on the Texas and Mexican railroad, in a running fight with the sheriff and posse while resisting arrest, about Oct. 10, died at Guerrero, Mexico, yesterday from the effects of his wounds. Manuel Gonzales was arrested a few days ago by Sheriff Sheely of Duval county, and is now in jail at San Diego awaiting the arrival of Sheriff Haynes to bring him to Zapatta county to answer an indictment for robbing a store at El .Sordo ranch some five years ago. Two Mexicans named Merin, who, it is charged, stole two horses at Benivedes, Duval county, were traced to a ranch in Mexico by the sheriff of Zapatta county, and have been arrested by the Mexican authorities and are now awaiting the routine of "proper handling" to bring the men to this side for trial. They claim Mexican citizenship.

John D. Cleary
TAX ASSESSOR KILLED
Official of Duval County Shot in Back  with Shotgun While In Restaurant.
Special to The News, San Diego, Tex., Dec, 21.—John D. Cleary, Tax Assessor of Duval County end a. prominent business man of this place, was assassinated test night In a restaurant in the heart of town, death being caused by a gunshot wound from a double-barreled shotgun. The entire discharge of buck shot entered the hack of deceased and several penetrated the body. About 10 o'clock last night Cleary. in company with J. F. Maxwell of Corsicana and another gentleman, entered a restaurant In the main part of town and were taking supper, Cleary having his back toward the door opening on the street, when they were shocked by the near discharge of a gun. Cleary fell backward and died instantly.. No arrests have as yet been made, there being absolutely no clew to the slayer. The entire community is shocked over that terrible affair and surprised at the boldness of, the deed, it being early in the evening, when the moon was shining brightly and the neighboring saloons and houses were filled with people. He stood on the sidewalk right at the entrance to the restaurant and immediately behind Cleary and discharged the gun. A few seconds after the first shot a second shot was fired. Cleary had been a resident of this county for the last twenty-five years, having come here from Corpus Christi He took an active part in politics and was engaged in the land business and also had stock interests. The funeral took place this evening from the Martinez Hotel and interment in the Catholic Cemetery.

William Hebbron
Laredo. Texas. Sept. 29.— William Hebbron. aged 56 years, a former prominent and wealthy stockman of Duval County, for whom the town of Hebbronville, In Jim Hogg County, is named, but who for some years past bad been engaged in mining in Mexico, but left that country during the Carranza Villa revolution, died at his home here suddenly Thursday morning: from heart disease. Tuesday he received a telegram from California stating that his brother was critically ill and not expected to live and he grieved over the news, and it is believed to have superinduced his death. Duval County Pioneer Dies. Texas. Feb. 11 (AP) BENAVIDES..— Mrs. Cecilia B. Macias. 86, pioneer of Duval County, died Thursday. Survivors include three sons. Catarino, Hipolito and Margarito Macias, and two daughters. Mrs. Tomasa M. Depena of Falfurrias and Mrs. Alfred Garza of Edna.

Corpus Christi, Tex., April 29.—J. W. Moser, ex-county judge of Duval county, died yesterday In San Diego, aged 68 years. Mr. Moser was one of the oldest settlers and best known citizens of this section of the state.

Linton L. Wright.
Courts Corpus, Tex.. March 10.—Linton L Wright, ex-sheriff of Duval county, a man highly respected, died here last night About 1 year ago he took up his residence at Silver City, N. M., and only returned here last week on account of the death of his brother, Dr. Wright of San Diego, Tex.
