Two
Runaways
A Coal Wagon Team and a Span of Livery Flyers
Take a Spin
Yesterday morning a job
team, belonging to Mr. Herrick, which was attached to a wagon containing
half a ton of coal, make a little trip of their own hook. They ran
some distance up fifth Street and efforts were made to stop them by a
number of people, but to no purpose. Finally a courageous
individual named L. Gordy, ran ahead of the team, and, grasping one of
the horses by the bit, held firmly on. He was thrown about and
bruised and scratched considerably, but he finally succeeded in stopping
them. No damage was done.
Another runaway was by
a team which had been hired at a livery, by an individual who urged the
horses too much and got them greatly excited. A short time before
dark he was observed riding up Fifth Street at an exceedingly rapid and
dangerous gait, and evidently was letting the horses choose their own
pace. By the time they reached the top of the hill on that street,
they were not anxious to run very fast. A short distance farther,
however, the sleigh was tipped over and the occupant was thrown out and
his face was slightly scratched. The team was soon stopped and
taken home, without having accomplished much
damage.
