County History

Frederick County was established in 1743 out of Orange County.  Frederick Lewis, Prince of Wales and the oldest son of King George II of Great Britain, was the inspiration behind the name.  Commander In Chief of the Colonial Forces, General George Washington's headquarters were in Winchester, Washington. 

During the Civil War, Winchester changed hands between the Union and Confederate Armies, about once every three weeks during the war.  Many battles were fought in Frederick County. Some of those battles are:

1862 - March - First Battle of Kernstown
1862 - May - First Battle of Winchester
1863 - June - Second Battle of Winchester
1864 - July - Second Battle of Kernstown
1864 - September - Third Battle of Winchester
1864 - October - Battle of Cedar Creek
