County History
Pittsylvania was formed in 1767 out of Halifax County. William Pitt, the 1st Earl of Chatham, is who the county is named after. The western part of Pittsylvania County became Henry County in 1777. Pittsylvania is the largest county in Virginia and consists of over 982 square miles.
