King County, as well as other counties and the state of Washington, are up for adoption. King County was formed out of territory within Thurston County, by the Oregon Territory legislature, on December 22, 1852. The county was named after William King, vice president under President Pierce.

In 2005 it became official and King County was renamed after Martin Luther King Jr.
