Forward
It has been our desire to present to
you - students and faculty - a 1950
Hyakem holding the memories of events
and activities which have made this year
a memorable one. This volume with its
display of campus views through its
composite snaps is a record of your
struggles, successes, and defeats - in work
and play.

It is our hope that it has captured the
elements which compose these activities
and the spirit found at CWCE.

President's Message
Campus scenes, buildings, professors, fellow
students, friends - these are the items in our
memories of college that we enjoy. The Hyakem
is full of these phases of college. Students and
faculty and friends alike refer to the Hyakem
many times in years that follow. We are grateful
that the Editor and Staff have published this
book. They have done much planning and
spent many hours in careful work that we may
have a record of the 1949-50 college year.

Central has had a good year. There has
been an abundance of talent in all of the
organizations and our athletic, musical and
dramatic activities have been of an unusual
quality. I believe that Central has rendered a
larger service to the State than in any year of
its history. In addition to the largest residence
enrollment we have had a busy year in off-
campus service such as extension classes, work
shops, student teaching, conferences, and
clinics.

We extend to the seniors our very best
wishes as they graduate and depart from the
campus. May they have successful years ahead.
Central will be glad to welcome them back for
as many visits as they can arrange. Best wishes!

Robert E. McConnell, President

Dedication (and photograph)
To Dr. Loron Sparks, the man who has done "everything there is to do in teacher education
at this institution," we dedicate the Hyakem for 1949-50.

In 1913 when Dr. Sparks first joined the staff he was named assistant director
of teacher training and head coach. Since that time he has watched Central mushroom
and spread from 200 students to one of 1,500.

Sports have long been one of the veteran's chief interests since entering
the institution. After leaving coaching he was active on the athletic
committee and for several years served as its chairman. He wrote the constitution
for the old Tri-Normal conference.

Students on the Central Washington campus will remember Dr. Sparks as outstanding
in his association with the Intercollegiate Knights. He was the original advisor
of the group serving from 1924 until 1947.

One of the most satisfying things about his work, he said, "was seeing our
training school grow from a position of leadership in the state to
national leadership."

On his resignation from Central, Dr. Sparks sums up his feelings by saying, "There
is something interesting in the life of an individual who has grown with an
institution professionally. At the time of reaching the point of separation,
there is a strong feeling of regret of leaving this institution at the time of
its greatest growth, both in numbers and in an improved professional program.
When you approach the point where you are no longer of service to something that
has been an integral part of your life, you are led to the point of view when you
wish there were no such thing as old age."

Another college year is fast drawing to a close and soon will become but a memory.
May this album of recordings - your Hyakem - serve to perpetuate the happy memories
of your college days. Within these pages are pictures and paragraphs to record for you
the fun and friendships so important a part of undergraduate life. Our sincere
appreciation to the Hyakem staff for giving so generously of their time and effort to create
this splendid yearbook.

Dean of Men
Frankly, I'm sentimental in regard to
the students whose faces and activities are
portrayed in the 1949-50 Hyakem. It has been
a pleasure to work and play with them. I
have developed a great respect for them and
a faith in their capacity to face the future.
Therefore, I offer no apology for my
sentimentality.

Senior Class
The seniors began their last year on the campus by electing officers in October. They
elected Gerhard Dieckmann, president; Dale Knutson, vice-president; Lois Dryden,
secretary-treasurer; and Mary Horten and Claude Fredericks, social commissioners.

In January, the annual Senior Sno-Carnival was held. An afternoon of skiing and
other snow activities was followed by dancing in the evening.

But seniors are a studious lot; there is not much time for social activities -
unless you take life easy and decide to become a teacher!

Seriously, though, the seniors do look back, a little sadly, on the years at
Central, but forward eagerly to the future. A future made bright by the
friendships made and the scholarship attained at CWCE.
