Junior Class
To lead the activities of the junior class during the year officers elected were Tom
Millar, president; Barbee Nesbitt, vice-president; Bill Hiblar, treasurer; Avis Face,
secretary; and Barbara Jensen and Don Duncan, co-social chairman. Mr. Klingbeil
served as advisor for the class. Barbee Nesbitt took over the duties of president during
winter quarter while Tom Millar was in Wenatchee practice teaching.

"Swiss Chalet" was the name given to the dance sponsored by the class in the fall.
Clever decorations including a fireplace of paper with davenports and skiis carried out
the intended theme.

The high spot on the junior class calendar was the annual barn dance held February
10. Intermission featured the presentation of prizes for the beard-growing contest, in
which an unusually large number of students entered.

The class also took an active part in Sweecy Day and sponsored the annual junior-
senior picnic.

Sophomore Class
The Sophomore Class started out the 1949-50 school year by electing Dick Martinen,
president; Harry Dixon, vice-president; Jeanne Clement, secretary-treasurer; and Paula
Lee and Bill Jarrett, co-social chairman.

An old-fashioned grease pole fight between the freshmen and sophomores gave
the sophs the privilege of lighting the Homecoming bonfire. Dean Fisk acted as referee
for the bout with the W Club patrolling the area.

The class gave a Homecoming skit, "The Old West," and received honorable
mention. They also entered a ship called the U.S.S. Sweecy in the parade, winning first
prize.

On February 17, the sophs gave their annual tolo, "Cupids Informal." The decoration
committee headed by Chuck Berrisford had the gym cleverly decorated with large
red pillars, hearts, and cupids. Russ Porter reigned as King Cupid for the evening. The
Music Makers furnished the music for a delightful evening of dancing.

Freshman Class
Following last year's example of electing new officers each quarter, the 1949-50
freshman class had a good representation from the class.

The class started its social events with a bang at Homecoming. The traditional
bonfire was one of the biggest ever made, with the greased pole contest one of the
fightingest ever staged at Central.

The winter officers started their term with the direction of the Mardi Gras, one
of the most colorful dances of the year.

Spring quarter the class opened their ice cream booth on the carnival grounds for
Sweecy Day. The climax of a very eventful year was the freshmen picnic which was a
huge success for everyone concerned.

The freshman class decided that the traditional green beanie deserved more recognition.
They received permission from the SGA to control the regulation of beanies
which was formerly handled by the halls. Next year the freshman will be required to
wear green felt beanies.

Mr. Hobson served as advisor for the freshman class for the second year in
succession.

Homecoming

Queen Edee (photograph)

Homecoming is an event that everyone - student, faculty, and alumni - look forward
to eagerly. The year 1949-50 lived up to all expectations with one of the best
Homecomings to be presented at Central in many a year.

Committee chairmen Tom Millar, Gene Montague, Don Fenton, Larry Lindberg, Dick
Norman, Marilyn Dreher, Avis Face, Tommy Knutson, Bill Ranniger, Liz Slater,
Lou Keene, and Dot Safreed put a great deal of effort into preparations to make
this Homecoming the affair that it was.

To set the celebration off to a good start the Kickoff Radio Broadcast was given
on Wednesday night, November 2, with the coronation of Queen Edee Sandberg and
Princesses Eva Eyres and Lorraine Temple.

The next two evenings were taken up by the skits which were original and well done.
The skits were presented two evenings to give everyone a chance to see them. This
year's Homecoming was especially set up to welcome back 25-year alumnus, not only
graduates, but also students who had attended but who had not graduated.

The greased pole fight took place on Friday night with the sophs again emerging
the victors. The frosh had built a gigantic bonfire that was lit by the sophomores.
Following the serpentine around the fire, a dance and games were held in the Campus
Club.

Saturday morning everyone on campus was either busily rushing to finish floats to ride
on or jockeying for a position on the sidewalk to view the many cleverly decorated
floats that entered the Homecoming parade through town.

In the afternoon the big event was the Homecoming football game between Central and
Western Washington College. The big blow came when the Central team was trounced
by the Western squad.

That evening two dances were held, one in the new gym with Walt Curtis' orchestra,
and a second in Sue Lombard Hall with the orchestra of Larry McVey. These dances
were very well attended by everyone.

On Sunday the annual organization breakfasts were held and other activities ceased
so that the participants could attend church services.

The Homecoming buttons for this year were designed by Snuffy Jenkins and were very
favorably received and enjoyed.

Homecoming signs were more numerous than usual and many of them were very cleverly
lighted, with such examples as the Test-Your-Strength concession and the Wheel of
Fortune.
