Captain Al Harris Dead
Was the First Captain of the Lifesaving Crew at Fort Canby
ASTORIA, Or., Aug 2 – Captain Al Harris, one of the best-known men on the river and for many years engaged in steamboating on the lower river, died at his residence in Ilwaco this afternoon, after a lingering illness. He was the first captain of the lifesaving crew at Fort Canby, when Major Blakenay was in charge of that branch of the service, and while in that capacity was the means of saving the lives of many fishermen.
During the past few years, or since the appointment of Captain Stewart, now in charge of the lifesaving crew, Captain Harris has been engaged in trapfishing. He resided on Willapa harbor from boyhood, and married a daughter of Richard Carruthers, of Oysterville. He was generally recognized as one of the bravest men, and frequently risked his life in order to save those of his fellow-men.
