SHOTS FROM BOX CAR KILL
Indiana Man Murdered While at Work in Washington
Portland, Ore., Nov. 15-W.H. Shores, 45 years old, of
Arcola, Ind., was murdered at midnight last night at Butler, Wash, a
way station on the Spokane, Portland and Seattle railroad. Shores
left his wife and children at Arcola and came West to earn money to
pay off the mortgage on his Indiana farm. He obtained a job as a
brakeman and had held it four years. He slept in the caboose, lived
sparingly and had his payments well under way. Last night he
inspected the car seals at Stevenson Wash., finding them intact. At
Butler he went along the train for a second inspection and found
that six had been broken by car thieves. From one of the opened box
cars came two shots. One struck him in the mouth and one in the
breast. He died just as the conductor arrived. Several suspects are
in jail.
