Elizabeth Dempsie } Whereas a negro boy names Tobias Matthews, son of negro Basal
release of } was hereafter bound by the Orphans Court of Washington
Tobias Matthews }County in the District of Columbia to the later John Dempsie
deceased to serve until he attained the Age of twenty one Now I Elizabeth Dempsie
widow and executrix of the late John Dempsie, do hereby relinquish and renounce all
claim to the services of the said Tobias and declare him fully discharged from said
apprenticeship with full liberty for his said mother to receive and provide for him in such
manner as she may deem proper Given under my hand and seal this 8th day of November
in the year 1809 .

Note: After extensive review of the available documentation including Dorothy Provine's District off Columbia Indentures of Apprenticeship 1801- 1893, I was unable to find any other records for Elizabeth Dempise or Tobias Mathews. From the evidence of this indenture release, itself, it appears that Elizabeth Dempsie as a widow was unable to provide for the training of Tobias Matthews |
