Lindsay Muse } Deed of Manumission Recorded
to } 13th day of July 1827
Charlotte }
To all to whom these presents shall come, be it know that
heretofore in the month of July last I Lindsay Muse, a free man of colour named in the
Bill of sale hereunto have purchased from Margaret Pickett, also named in the said Bill of
sale a mulatto woman, named Charlotte, also mentioned therein and intended to be
hereby assigned to me, for the sum of two hundred dollars; and said Charlotte being my
sister, and being desirous to set her free, be it further known that I the said Lindsay Muse
of Washington County in the district of Columbia for divers good causes and in
consideration of the sum of five dollars current money liberated manumitted and set free
my said mulatto woman named Charlotte being of the age of twenty four years and able
to work and gain a sufficient livelihood and maintenance and her the said mulatto I do
declare to be henceforth free manumitted and discharged from manner of servitude or
service to me my executors and administrators forever
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand
and seal this 22ndday of January in the year eighteen hundred and twenty seven.

I hereby Certify that I have known Charlotte a Coloured woman the property of the late
George Pickett of Richmond Va. for many years, and that she is, and has been the wife of
William Muse also for many years - I further Certify that James Currie who sold
Charlotte to her present owner married the eldest daughter of the said George Pickett to
whom she may have divested by the said Pickett. The parties William Muse and
Catherine [sic] his wife have been long known to me and I believe them to be orderly and
respectable
