	N. Yard 							April 12 - 1804

			You are hereby attached to the Navy Yard Washington as head 
Carpenter, in virtue of the act supplementary to the Act entitled  "An Act providing for a 
Naval Peace Establishment  and for other purposes-"and as such you will report yourself 
to the Commanding Officer of the Yard-

Endnotes :This mass appointment letter from Secretary of the Navy Robert Smith through Commodore Thomas Tingey, reflects the expansion of the Washington Navy Yard in 1804. Initially the Yard employed only a small group of workers required for construction of the wharf and some of the first buildings including the workshops and Commandants House.
