Washington Navy Yard
Horse Cart Drivers Payroll for November 1867

Furnished by : John Sharp

Horse Cart Drivers were employed by the Washington Navy Yard from its foundation. Drivers were primarily used to move supplies and material about the Yard. This payroll from November 1867 reflects the number of days and per diem pay rate for WNY Horse Cart Drivers. For the month of November 1867 there were 17 Cart Drivers at WNY and of these 6 are women some of the first to ever work at the Yard. These women were paid the same rate as their male counterparts, Horse Cart Drivers were typically expected to provide their own horse and cart although they were sometimes given additional allowance for feed and fodder.

Almira V. Brown employed as a seamstress was the first female employee she went to work in 1864
