Hirsch, Emelyn Isabell (3 Sept. 1886 – 19 July 1944)

* Funeral rites for Mrs. Emelyn Isabell Hirsch, 57, wife of Everett C. Hirsch, city superintendent of schools, were held Saturday morning at the Helke Funeral Home and at 2 o’clock in First Universalist church in Wausau. Mrs. Hirsch died Wednesday of last week in a Wausau hospital. Rev. F. J. Jordan of Eau Claire officiated and burial was made in Colby.

Mrs. Hirsch, the former Emelyn Cook, was born Sept. 3, 1886, in Unity and was married here June 15, 1912. She was a graduate of the Unity high school and the Oshkosh State Teachers college and taught in high schools in the state previous to her marriage.

Surviving are her husband; two sons, Major Allan S. Hirsch who is an army field artillery officer whose present whereabouts are unknown and Donald E. Hirsch of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, George S. Cook and Walter Cook of Unity, and Raymond Cook of Marathon; three sisters, Etta Mason of West Allis, Mrs. Edith Tollefson of Solen Springs, Miss Mabel Cook of Chicago, and six grandchildren.

Those from Unity attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Sewell Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Cook, Walter Cook, Mrs. Bernie Mabbott, Mrs. Russell Andrews, Mrs. Everett Capes, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Tollefson, Corye Hirsch, Mrs. and Mrs. Herman Vogt, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. McNeight.

Hirsch, Everett C. (1886 – 19 July 1946)

* Everett C. Hirsch, 60, city superintendent of schools of Wausau, for the past 12 years, died at St. Mary’s Hospital, Wausau, Friday morning, July 19.

Mr. Hirsch suffered a fracture of his left hip in a fall down his basement stairway last January and had been in the hospital most of the time since. He contracted a respiratory ailment in the spring and he also suffered from a heart condition.

Mr. Hirsch was a widely known educator throughout the state and since he started his duties in Wausau in 1934, when he filled the vacancy left by the resignation of S. B. Tobey, he has introduced many new educational practices which helped to raise the standards of the Wausau school system, Wausau educators said.

Mr. Hirsch was born in the town of Scott, Sheboygan County, and spent his boyhood in Marathon County. He was graduated from the high school in Unity in 1904 and Colby High School in 1905. He was graduated from the Oshkosh Normal in 1909 with a bachelor of philosophy degree. He later attended the University of Wisconsin, where he received his master of philosophy degree.

He was married to Miss Emelyn Cook in Unity June 15, 1912. She died exactly two years ago, the date Mr. Hirsch passed away. He was married to Miss Florence Olmstead in Fremont, Mich. June 9, 1945.

Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Donald E. Hirsch, Washington D.C. and Allen S. Hirsch, Pittsburg, Pa.; a brother, C. J. Hirsch, Abbotsford, and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 21, from the First Universalist Church at Wausau with burial taking place at Colby.

Among those from here who attended the funeral at Wausau were Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Cook, W. E. Cook and the Misses Anna and Mayme Yahr. Those attending the graveside services were Ed Diethman, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Diethman, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Vogt and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Langjahr.


Hirsch, John F. (5 Apr. 1859 – 18 Jan. 1933)

* John F. Hirsch, for many years a resident of the town of Hull, and well known in this city, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, on January 18th. Death was due to heart failure following an operation. His passing came as a distinct shock to his family and friends, because he had not appeared to be seriously ill until late in the afternoon of the 16th. Failing to respond to treatment at home, he was hurried to the Chippewa Falls hospital where an operation was performed on the 17th, and his death came a day later.

John F. Hirsch was born in the town of Sherman, Sheboygan county, April 5, 1859. In 1885 he was married to Sarah J. Rohrbacher and lived on a farm in the town of Scott until 1902 when he moved with his family to a farm in Marathon county. He resided there until 1919, when he sold his farm and moved to the village of Abbotsford, where he resided until the time of his death. His wife died in 1925, and in 1931 he was married to Miss Flora M. Petrie of Abbotsford, who, with two sons, Everett of Rice Lake, and Coryl of Abbotsford, survives him. Two other sons preceded him in death, Clyde, who died in infancy, and Calvin, who died in 1923.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Abbotsford, the Reverend Bushendorf of Colby officiating, at two o’clock on Saturday, January 21, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. People from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Winkler of Milwaukee; Mrs. Edna Suessmith of Wauwatosa; Earl Hirsch of Plymouth, Miss Helga Riedt of Sheboygan; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hirsch of Chilton; and Mr. and Mrs. George Rohrbacher of Weyauwega. Mr. Hirsch was a man of sterling character and represented a high type of American citizenship. His passing will be mourned by a large circle of friends.
