* Clarence Otto Kops of Unity, died at the Mr. Washington sanitarium at Eau Claire on Thursday, Oct. 1st, 1931, quick consumption being the cause of his departure to the distant shore. He was a member of the Zion’s Lutheran church of Colby from which the funeral services were held Monday afternoon and were largely attended by the people of Unity and vicinity. The services were conducted by Rev. O. Hoffmann, pastor of the church. The girls who acted as flower bearers and the young men who bore his remains to their last resting place were his friends and companions, paying their last respects to their friend.

Clarence, was born at Neillsville, Wis., Oct. 14, 1911, and, a few years later, moved to the village of Unity with his grand parents with whom he made his home. He was educated in the public schools of that village and was a member of the class of 1930. But a few weeks ago his illness was first reported and his disease, which was given as quick consumption, did not seem possible for he had always been apparently a strong rugged lad, but, in some unfortunate moment, he must have contracted the dreaded disease which, in a few short weeks, carried him beyond the river from which there is no return.

Clarence leaves to mourn his death, his mother, Mrs. Roy Hudson, his grand mother, Mrs. Herman Kops, and her family, Herman, Wallace, Lester, Norman, Elsie, Odelia and Isobelle Kops and the people of the entire community.

He was a young man of sterling qualities and was held in the highest respect by his many friends of the community.

* Mr. and Mrs. Julius Kops, of the town of Colby, were called upon to mourn the loss of their six weeks old daughter. The little one died early Monday morning, and the funeral was held from the Lutheran church, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. A. Kuring officiating. This is the fifth child that Mr. and Mrs. Kops have lost and they are certainly entitled to, and we believe they have the sympathy of the entire community. *** Note: Her name and date of birth are from a Colby Memorial Cemetery Index, although she is listed under the surname of Kobs on that list.

Kops, Wallace (7 May 1905 – 21 Sept. 1935)

* Wallace Kops, age thirty, farmer residing just north of Unity, was drowned Saturday evening at about 6:30 o’clock in Prairie lake, near Chetek, where he was fishing with four companions, namely – Alvah Messer, Loraine Purkis, Floyd Purkis, all of Unity, and Frank Purkis of Oak Park, Ill., who was visiting relatives at Unity.

The accident happened at about 6:30 P.M. Saturday. One boat, occupied by the Purkis boys, had gone ashore and the second boat, containing Messer and Kops, was headed toward the landing when Kops fell into the water. It is believed Kops fainted, causing him to fall from the boat. He was caught by the foot by Messer but the latter was unable to get him back into the boat. Messer’s cries for help were unanswered for some time.

When rescuers arrived, they began to drag the bottom of the lake. Operations were continued until 10 P.M. and were resumed early Sunday morning. A professional diver failed to locate the body and the dragging was resumed. At 4:00 P.M. Sunday the body was recovered.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Zion Lutheran church in Colby, Rev. O. Hoffmann officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery.

The deceased is survived by his widow, who was Miss Minnie Larson until her marriage to Kops a little more than a year ago; his mother, Mrs. Herman Kops; three brothers, Herman of Madison; Lester of Granton; Norman, at home; four sisters, Mrs. Elsie Purkis of Unity, mother of Loraine and Floyd, who were members of the fishing party; Mrs. Arthur Kurth of Granton; Mrs. Gustave Johnson of Spencer; Mrs. Roy Hudson of Unity.

Mr. Kops was born at Unity May 7th, 1905, and was a resident there all his life. He was married on June 30, 1934, to Miss Minnie Larson at Ironwood, Mich. The couple lived on a farm about a mile and one-half north of Unity.
