* Spencer – Mrs. Adelia M. Mellenthin, 86, died at 10:52 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, where she was admitted earlier that day.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, the Rev. William Ruhbusch officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Saturday at Rux Funeral Home.

The former Adelia Schneider was born April 14, 1894 in the Town of Unity, Clark County, and attended schools there. On April 29, 1914 in the Town of Unity, she and Frank Mellenthin were married. He died Dec. 14, 1960.

The Mellenthins farmed until retiring in 1948, later moving to Spencer. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid.

She is survived by four sons, Norman of Spencer, Donald of Huntington Beach, Calif., Harold of Portage, and Lloyd of Anderson, Ind.; a daughter, Mrs. Erma Singstock of Wausau; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Leona Bornowski of Wausau, and Vera Sloniker of Greenwood.

Five brothers, one sister, and her parents, Henry and Emma Schneider, are deceased.

Mellenthin, Albert H. (9 Mar. 1892 – 30 Aug. 1960)

* Spencer – Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock in St. John’s Lutheran Church for Albert H. Mellenthin, 68, who died of a heart attack Tuesday evening at his home here. The Rev. M. L. Yonker will officiate and burial will be made in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the Jasperson Funeral Home beginning this evening.

Mr. Mellenthin was born March 9, 1892, in the town of Unity. He was married to the former Elsie Schroeder. They farmed in the town of Unity until his retirement eight years ago when he moved to Spencer. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Herman (Elinor) Luepke, Spencer; and Mrs. George (Shirley) Clark, Edgewater, Fla.; four sons, Ray, Rockford, Ill.; Oscar, Beaver Dam; Gordon, Colby; and Wilbur, Unity; three sisters, Mrs. Martha Schwantes, Owen; Mrs. William Ewald and Mrs. Amanda Krause, Spencer; and three brothers, Frank and Arthur, Spencer, and Otto, Marshfield. There are 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

His brother, Herman, preceded him in death.


Mellenthin, Arthur (27 Mar. 1899 – 4 Feb. 1975)

* Spencer – Arthur Mellenthin, 75, died about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at his home on 106 Wisconsin St., Spencer.

Services have been set for 2 p.m. Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, North Spencer, with the Rev. David J. Ault, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Visitations may be made at the Rux Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Thursday.

Mr. Mellenthin was born March 27, 1899, in the town of Unity and was married to the former Edna Miller on June 22, 1921, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Veefkind. She preceded him in death March 28, 1971.

The couple farmed in the town of Unity until 1954. They then moved to Spencer, where he worked for a number of years at Land O’Lakes and Pathfinder before retiring.

He was an active member on the former Willow Brook School Board and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, North Spencer, where he had served for a number of years on the church council.

His second marriage took place Sept. 11, 1974, at St. John’s Lutheran Church to the former Frieda Sommer, who survives him.

Other survivors include a son, Kenneth, route 1, Spencer; four daughters, Mrs. C. A. (Phyllis) Simpson, Corpus Christi, Texas; Mrs. Allen (Marlynn) Hotsenpillar, Fremont, Calif.; Mrs. Jack (Theone) Lundquist, Mequon; and Mrs. Porter (Janice) Cooper, West Allis; a stepson, Marvin Sommer, Unity; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Thomas (Elaine) Reynolds, Dorchester; a brother, Otto, Marshfield; a sister, Mrs. Anna Schultz, Milwaukee; 22 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were three brothers and three sisters.


Mellenthin, Bernice Lucille (11 Apr. 1920 – 24 Sept. 1963)

* Spencer – Mrs. Eldor Mellenthin, 43, route 1, Spencer, died of a lingering illness Tuesday evening in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church at north Spencer. The Rev. M. L. Yonker will officiate and burial will be made in the parish cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Hansen Funeral Home in Marshfield from Thursday noon until 11 a.m. Saturday, when it will be taken to the church.

The former Bernice Lucille Woodkey was born April 11, 1920 in the town of Sherman, Clark County. She married Eldor Mellenthin Dec. 25, 1941, in the town of Sherman. After their marriage the couple moved to a farm in the town of Unity, north of Spencer where they had resided since.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid Society.

Mrs. Mellenthin is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. David (Corrine) Allar, Marshfield; a sister, Mrs. Rudolph (Evelyn) Vetter, Marshfield; two brothers, Roger Woodkey, Marshfield; and Lavern Woodkey, Texas; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Max Woodkey, Marshfield; and a granddaughter, Julie.

She was preceded in death by a son.


Mellenthin, Dawn Marie (2 Feb. 1964 – 23 Feb. 1970)

* Colby – Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church for Dawn Marie Mellenthin, 6, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Mellenthin, Colby, who died early Monday at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield following an illness of two months.

The Rev. David Pankow, pastor, will officiate and burial will be made in the Colby Memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the Lulloff Funeral Home this evening (Tuesday).

Dawn Marie was born Feb. 2, 1964, at Medford, and at the time of her death was a member of the kindergarten class at Colby Grade School.

Survivors include her parents; two brothers, Danny Mellenthin, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Dale Mellenthin, Rockford, Ill.; and her grandparents, Mrs. Elsie Mellenthin, Spencer, and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Frome, Colby.

The family suggests that any memorials be made to the Zion Lutheran Church.

* Spencer – Mrs. Arthur (Edna) Mellenthin, 68, of Spencer, died of complications at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, at the Marshfield Convalescent Center.

The former Edna Miller was born March 12, 1903, in the town of Sherman, Clark County, and received her education at the Veefkind School.

She was married June 22, 1921, at Veefkind, to Arthur Mellenthin. The couple farmed in the town of Unity until 1956, then moved to Spencer.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Kenneth, Spencer; four daughters, Mrs. C. A. (Phyllis) Simpson, Corpus Christi, Texas; Mrs. Allen (Marlynn) Hotsenpillar, Fremont, Calif.; Mrs. Jack (Theone) Lundquist, Thiensville, Wis.; and Mrs. Melvin (Janice) Meyer, Greendale, Wis.; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Louie Miller, Chicago; and Norman Miller, Colby.

Because of the funeral, Wednesday afternoon Lenten services at St. John’s Lutheran Church, have been cancelled.


Mellenthin, Eldor F. (14 May 1916 – 8 May 1989)

* Spencer – Eldor F. Mellenthin, 72, Spencer, died at 11:10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, where he had been admitted April 28.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Spencer, with the Rev. William Ruhbusch officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, North Spencer.

Pallbearers will be Charles Ehlert, Roger Woodkey, Brian Denk, Duane Matter, Ken Monness and Herbert Schwantes.

Visitation will be at Rux Funeral Home, Spencer, from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday.

He was born May 14, 1916, in Clark County, to Emil and Elsie Mellenthin. He attended Willow Brook School and graduated from Spencer High School.

He was married to Bernice Woodkey, who died in September 1963. He married Vera Huber Sept. 29, 1967, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, North Spencer.

He farmed in the town of Unity. He also worked at Land O’Lakes, Spencer, retiring in 1981.

He was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, and held various church positions there. He was presently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Corrine Allar of Marshfield; one son, Erland Schweke of Spencer; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents and one son.


Mellenthin, Elsie A. (24 Jan. 1892 – 10 Feb. 1977)

The former Elsie A. Schroeder was born Jan. 24, 1892, in the Town of Brighton and was married to Emil Mellenthin on Dec. 3, 1913, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The couple farmed on Route 1, Spencer, until retiring in 1952.

They observed their golden anniversary in 1963 and their 60th in 1973. The Mellenthins also reigned as king and queen during the 1974 centennial celebration of Unity Township.

Mrs. Mellenthin was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Eldor, Spencer, a grandchild and three great-grandchildren.

Four sisters and three brothers preceded her in death.

The former Elsie L. Schroeder was born Aug. 23, 1896 at Beaver Dam to Mr. and Mrs. Albert (Hannah Priebe) Schroeder. She was married to Albert H. Mellenthin Oct. 18, 1916 at the Veefkind church. He died Aug. 30, 1960.

The couple farmed in the town of Unity until October of 1952, when they moved to Spencer.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, its Ladies Aid and LWML.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Herman (Eleanor) Luepke, Spencer, and Mrs. John (Shirley) Yelich, Milwaukee; four sons, Raymond, Rockford, Ill., Oscar, Beaver Dam, Gordon, Colby, and Wilbur, Route 1, Unity; two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Linda) Krahn, Loyal, and Miss Frieda Schroeder, Neillsville; two brothers, Roy Schroeder, Loyal, and Bert Schroeder, San Jose, Calif., 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, a brother, a grandson and a granddaughter.


Mellenthin, Frank (19 July 1899 – 14 Dec. 1960)

* Spencer – Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church for Frank Mellenthin, 71, who died Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. The Rev. W. R. Krueger officiated and burial was made in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery at North Spencer.

Pallbearers were Norman Krause, Herbert Schwantes, Gordon Ewald, Ray Mellenthin, Arnold Mellenthin.

The Walther League choir sang “Asleep in Jesus” and “I’m But a Stranger Here” accompanied by Mrs. Arnold Bruesewitz at the organ.

Mr. Mellenthin was born in the town of Unity July 19, 1889. He farmed there until nine years ago, when he retired and moved to Spencer. His marriage to the former Delia Schneider took place April 29, 1914, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Riplinger.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Milbert (Irma) Singstock, Wausau; four sons, Norman, Spencer; Donald, Salina, Kan.; Harold, Beaver Dam; and Lloyd, Anderson, Ind.; two brothers, Arthur, Spencer; and Otto, Marshfield; four sisters, Mrs. Martha Schwantes, Owen; Mrs. Amanda Krause and Mrs. Amelia Ewald, Spencer; and Mrs. Anna Schultz, Milwaukee; and 12 grandchildren.

Mellenthin, Frank Sr. (21 Mar. 1859 – 27 Feb. 1937)

* Spencer – Funeral services for Frank Mellenthin Sr., 77, who died of pneumonia Saturday morning, were conducted this afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran church, preceded by short rites at the home. The Rev. A. C. Stapel, pastor of the church, conducted German services at the home, and English services at the church. Burial took place in the North cemetery.

Six grandsons acted as pallbearers. They were Arthur Schwantes, Gordon Ewald, Raymond Mellenthin, Norbert Mellenthin, Norman Krause, and Norman Mellenthin. Floral tributes were in charge of five granddaughters, Mrs. Albert Schultz, Mrs. William Eckes, Mrs. Leonard Cramer, Erna Schwantes, and Eleanor Mellenthin.

Mr. Mellenthin was a native of Germany, having been born there on March 21, 1859, in Kitzerow, Pommerania. When he was 19 years of age, he came to America with his parents and lived for a short time in Dodge county before coming here. They purchased a farm four miles northwest of Spencer, in the town of Unity.

On Dec. 14, 1882, he was married to Miss Albertina Seefeldt at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Spencer. The couple resided on the farm until they retired and built their present home in Spencer about 15 years ago. Their son, Arthur, now manages the farm. Mr. Mellenthin was active in township affairs, having held various offices, and was a member of the school board.

On Dec. 14, 1932, Mr. and Mrs. Mellenthin celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Mellenthin, who has been an invalid for a number of years, was unable to attend the funeral today.

Surviving besides his widow are four sons, Frank, Albert and Arthur Mellenthin, Spencer, and Otto Mellenthin, Marshfield; four daughters, Mrs. Martha Schwantes, Mrs. Amanda Krause, Spencer; Mrs. Amelia Ewald, Unity; and Mrs. Anna Geil, Milwaukee. Thirty-seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren also survive, as do two sisters, Mrs. Herman Schwantes and Mrs. Louisa Foth, Spencer. A daughter, Ida, and a son, Herman, preceded him in death.

Mellenthin, Frieda (23 May 1913 – 12 Dec. 1995)

* Frieda (Sommer) Mellenthin, 82, Spencer, died Dec. 12, 1995, at St. Joseph’s Hospital hospice home, House of the Dove.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in North Spencer. Burial will be in Colby Memorial Cemetery.

She was born May 23, 1913, in Edgar, to Otto and Susan (Martyn) Mesalk. She was married to Carl Sommer on Feb. 14, 1931, and he died on Sept. 18, 1970. She was then married to Arthur Mellenthin on Sept. 11, 1974, and he died Feb. 4, 1975.

She farmed in the Unity area, and later worked as a cook at Colby High School. She worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield and then managed the Senior Citizens Meals at Spencer. She was an excellent seamstress.

She is survived by one daughter, Elaine (Thomas) Reynolds of Dorchester, one son, Marvin (Jeanette) Sommer of Unity; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; four step-children, Phillis Simson of Corpus Christi, Texas; Marlyn Hotsenpiller of Florence, Mont., Theone Lundquist of Mequon, and Ken (Lois) Mellenthin of Spencer; 17 step-grandchildren; four sisters, Linda (Ed) Morrill of Marshfield, Sally Schmidt of Kiethville, La., Lillian Denfeld of Wausau and Doris Nesbitt of Mosinee.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and five sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name as the family will establish a memorial at a later date.

Frieda fought a long, hard battle against her illness but always remained cheerful and optimistic. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

* Colby – Services for Marion Louise Mellenthin, 69, who died at 6:42 p.m. Sunday at her home in rural Unity, Clark County, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Colby.

The Rev. Mark Neumann will officiate. Burial will be in Colby Memorial Cemetery. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be at Maurina Funeral Home, Abbotsford, from 6-9 tonight, and then at the church from 10 a.m. until service time, Wednesday. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary No. 2227 will attend as an honor guard and will have services at 8 tonight at the funeral home.

She was born Sept. 2, 1922, in the town of Colby, to Edwin and Lydia (Schumann) Frome. She graduated from Colby High School and attended beauty school in Appleton. She was married to Gordon Mellenthin June 12, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church.

She owned and operated Marion’s Beauty Salon in Colby and was co-owner of the Gor-Mar Department Store in Colby. She retired in 1987.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was president of the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary No. 2227 and was vice president of AAL Branch 1235.

Survivors include her husband, two sons, Danne of Colby and Dale of Freeport, Ill.; three brothers, Edwin Frome Jr. of Cecil; Glen Frome of Crandon and William Frome of Colby; one sister, Mrs. Donald (Lennice) Barr of Sun Prairie; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, one daughter, Dawn Mellenthin, one brother and one sister.

Memorials may be given in her name to Zion Lutheran Church and St. Joseph’s Hospital Hospice Care Unit, Marshfield.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Friday at Community Funeral Home, Spencer.

Mr. Mellenthin was born Feb. 2, 1915, in the town of Unity in Clark County, to Frank and Adelia (Schneider) Mellenthin. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1933.

He married Eleanor Edblom on Dec. 12, 1942, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Unity. He farmed in the town of Unity until retiring in 1982. He then sold the farm to his son, Douglas, and moved to Spencer. He had been a resident of the Clark County Health Care Center in Owen since 1989.

He served on the Board of Directors for the town of Unity, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Riplinger, Clark Electric in Greenwood from 1976 to 1983 and A.S.C.S. Farm Bureau from 1968 to 1977.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Mellenthin; his children, Karen (Dennis) Larson of Winter Park, Colo., Nancy (Ronald) Dietsche of Spencer and Douglas (Lou Ann) Mellenthin of Spencer; four grandchildren, Tammi (Mike) Schiferl of Marshfield. Jodi Dietsche of Marshfield, Lori Larson of Denver and Linda (Scott) Chisholm of Roselle, Ill.; one great-grandchild, Ben Chisholm; and one sister, Erna Singstock of Wausau.

He was predeceased by his parents; and three brothers, Lloyd, Harold and Donald.

* Otto A. Mellenthin, 86, of 1517 S. Locust Ave. died at 3:45 a.m. today at the Marshfield Convalescent Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with bural in Hillside Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Ronald Jansen will officiate.

Visitation will be at the Hansen Funeral Home from 4-9 p.m. Friday and until 9:30 a.m. Saturday and then at the church after 10 a.m.

Pallbearers will be Norman Mellenthin, Kenneth Mellenthin, Wilbur Mellenthin, Arthur Schwantes, Allen Dietsche and Willard Fromme.

He was born March 14, 1896, at Spencer, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank (Christina) Mellenthin. He received his education in the Spencer area schools and took a course in agriculture at the University of Wisconsin.

He and Mary Itzen were married on Nov. 19, 1919 at Spencer. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1969. He was a cheesemaker all of his life. He operated cheese factories at Unity, Klondike and the Mann Cheese Factory at Mannville. He retired in 1954.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife, a son, Arnold Mellenthin of Marshfield; a foster son, Kenneth Wills of Marshfield; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Anna Schultz of Milwaukee.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
