COLBY - Dorothy M. Schjoneman, 84, of Colby died at her residence Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, with her family at her side.

Funeral services for Dorothy will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Colby. The Rev. Pastor Mark Neumann will officiate.

Inurnment will be in the town of Brighten Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Marty Schjoneman, Jeffrey Seefluth, Matthew Razink, Scott Schjoneman, Brad Schjoneman, Ryan Seefluth and John Laabs.

Visitation with family and friends will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Maurina Funeral Home in Abbotsford.

Dorothy Marie Sabler was born July 13, 1920, in Colby, the daughter of Carl and Minnie (Franz) Sabler. She was a graduate of Colby High School and worked in the family grocery store. Dorothy and Merlin Schjoneman were united in marriage on March 1, 1938, in Marshfield.

For more than 15 years, Dorothy owned and operated the original Like-New Store in Colby. She had great pride in her community and served as president of Zion Lutheran Church Ladies Aid; past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2227 Ladies Auxiliary of Colby, president of Friends of the Library; presiding president of the American Legion Post No. 0266 Ladies Auxiliary; and was one of the original founders of Colby Homemakers Club. She enjoyed fishing and was an avid card player. Merlin and Dorothy traveled throughout the United States and Europe, enjoying the sights and memories. She worshipped her grandchildren as an extraordinary grandmother.

Dorothy will be dearly missed by her husband of 66 years, Merlin Schjoneman of Colby; three sons, Allen (Gloria) Schjoneman of Holcombe, Mark (Barbara) Schjoneman of Colby, and Kirk (Marilyn) Schjoneman of Denmark; two daughters, Karen Schjoneman of Colby and Margo (Richard) Seefluth of Owen; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Janice Lee; and one sister, Serena Schade.

A memorial will be established in her name at a later date.

* Unity – Ernest E. Schjoneman, 58, Coos Bay, Ore., a former resident of Unity, died Thursday in the Veteran’s Hospital at Portland, Ore., where he had been a patient for one year.

Military services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby. The Rev. Robert Sutherland will officiate, and burial will be made in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery at Unity.

The body will repose at the funeral home from noon Monday until the time of services.

Mr. Schjoneman was born Feb. 17, 1910, in the town of Brighton, Marathon County, and received his education in the Unity schools. He enlisted in the armed services in World War II.

For the past 20 years he had resided in Oregon and had been employed as a millwright for a lumber company. He never married.

He was a member of the Lutheran church.

Survivors are his mother, Mrs. Edith Schjoneman, Unity; three sisters, Mrs. Edwin (Hazel) Witt, Colby; Mrs. Robert (Verna) Kester, Wisconsin Rapids; and Mrs. James (Norma) Liebelt, Myrtle Point, Ore.; and a brother, Gordon Schjoneman, Coos Bay, Ore.

His father preceded him in death.


Merlin Schjoneman (7 Dec. 1918 – 8 Dec. 2006)

COLBY – Merlin Schjoneman, 88, of Colby died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at Zion Lutheran Church, Colby.

Inurnment will be in the town of Brighton Cemetery will full military rites by Colby VFW Post 2227. The Rev. Mark Neumann will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, at Maurina Funeral Home, Abbotsford. There will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Merlin was born Dec. 7, 1918, in the town of Brighton, Marathon County, to Mogan and Kate (Ayre) Schjoneman. He served his country during World War II in Germany. Merlin and Dorothy Sabler were married March 1, 1938, in Marshfield. She died Sept. 27, 2004. Merlin and Les Bowen introduced Ski Doo snowmobiles to the central Wisconsin area. He owned and operated Schjoneman Trucking in Colby for many years. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. Merlin traveled all 50 states, all the provinces of Canada and five foreign countries. He was affiliated with Zion Lutheran Church, a member of Colby VFW Post 2227, Colby American Legion, and the Owen Masonic Lodge 317.

Merlin is survived by his children, Allen (Gloria) Schjoneman of Holcombe, Mark (Barbara) Schjoneman of Colby, Kirk (Marilyn) Schjoneman of Denmark, Karen Schjoneman of Colby, and Margo (Richard) Seefluth of Lac du Flambeau; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Janice Lee; two brothers; and one sister.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given for cancer research or to hospice.


Mogan L. Schjoneman (25 Mar. 1875 – 8 Apr. 1951)

* Funeral services for Mogen Louis Schjoneman, 76, Town of Brighton, who died Sunday morning, were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the home and at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist Church, Unity, the Rev. Lee Holmes and the Rev. F. Smith officiating.

Mr. Schjoneman was born March 25, 1875, in Oxford, N.J. He came to the Town on Brighton with his parents at an early age settling on a farm. That same farm has been his home ever since.

While a young man he cooked in logging camps and on log drives. He was married October 3, 1905, to the former Kate L. Ayer. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and a member of the Brighton Town Board for 30 years.

He is survived by two sons, Antone, Unity; and Merlin, Colby; and one daughter, Mrs. Harley Christiansen, Marshfield; nine grandchildren.

His wife died February 14, 1948. A son, Emery, and two brothers also preceded him in death.


John L. Schjonneman (6 May 1880 – 12 Sept. 1945)

* John L. Schjonneman, aged 65 years, died very suddenly at his farm home in the town of Brighton, Wednesday morning, Sept. 12, the cause of his death being a stroke. Mr. Schjonneman had made the town of Brighton his home practically his entire life and was a well known and highly respected resident of that community. The funeral services for Mr. Schjonneman were held at the farm home Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock and at 2:30 o’clock at the Trinity Lutheran church in Unity, with the Rev. Arthur Almquist in charge of the services. The body was taken to the home from the Lulloff Funeral Home at Colby.

John L. Schjonneman was born May 6, 1880, in Oxford, N.J. and came to Unity with his parents when he was a year old, residing in this community since that time. Two years ago he retired from farming and spent a year in Marshfield, but in April of this year went back to his farm home. He was married at Unity Dec. 14, 1907, to Edith Ringquist, who survives with five children: Mrs. Ed Witte of Colby; S-Sgt. Ernest, enroute from Germany; Mrs. Robert Kester at home; Mrs. James Leibelt of Stratford and Gordon at Colby; six grandchildren and one brother, Mogen, also survive.

In 1927, together with his family, he joined the Trinity Lutheran church in Unity, to which he remained until his death.


Kate L. Schjonneman (16 Jan. 1886 – 14 Feb. 1948)

* A large number of neighbors and friends attended the funeral services of Mrs. Morgan Schjonneman at the Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon. Rev. F. J. Smith and Rev. R. J. Fleming of Marshfield were the officiating pastors. Burial was made in the Town of Brighton.

Mrs. Schjonneman passed away at the St. Joseph Hospital Saturday morning after being ill the past five months.

She was born January 16, 1886, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cullen Ayers, in the Town of Unity and was united in marriage to Mr. Schjonneman October 3, 1906. She was a graduate of the Unity High school, a member of the Methodist Church and the Womens Society of Christian Service, and a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

This community has been her home practically all of her life and she was held in high esteem by her neighbors and friends.

The quartet sang “Safe In The Arms of Jesus” and “Rock of Ages” and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Domer sang “Goodnight Here, But Good Morning Up There.” The singing was accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Tom Loughead.

The church was filled with many beautiful floral offerings and a memorial was given to the church in her memory.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Mrs. Harley (Arlie) Christiansen, Marshfield; two sons, Anton, Unity; and Merlin, Colby; eight grandchildren; and three sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Belva Loney and Mrs. William Cammers, both of Colby; Mrs. Arthur Wisnosky and Jonas and Walter Ayer, Spencer; Owen Ayer, Goodman; and William Ayer, Loyal.

A son, Emery, died in 1930.
