Smith, Lloyd J. (10 Dec. 1896 – 2 May 1953)

* Funeral services for Lloyd J. Smith, 56, of Colby, who died Saturday, were held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist church at Colby, with the Rev. Harvey Schall officiating. During the church services, hymns, “Face to Face,” were sung by Harry Bender, and “In the Garden,” by a quartette.

At the graveside in the Abbotsford cemetery, a quartette from Athens sang “Sleep, Soldier Boy,” and military rites were conducted by the V.F.W., Knaack-Thompson Post No. 865. A salute was fired by the National Guard and taps were blown by Louis Janda and Stanley Bush.

Pallbearers were Clarence Anderson, Ben and Leo Apfelbeck, Ervin Bitter, Ed Hoeft, and Henry Voightlander.

Lloyd Smith was born Dec. 10, 1896, in Darlington. His marriage to Miss Birdie Erickson took place in Chippewa Falls, Sept. 16, 1920. He served in the United States army during World War I and was overseas with the Red Arrow Division. He was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knaack-Thompson Post No. 865, when it was organized in 1932. He was always very active in the organization having held about all of the offices. For years he took part in the Memorial Day programs and at the burial of comrades, when he sang.

Survivors include his wife and a son, Homer, Colby; a daughter, Mrs. Herbert (Hazel) Pacholke, Madison; four grand children; three brothers, Homer, Marshfield; Chester, Loyal; and Philip, Spencer; and a sister, Mrs. Earl Zastrow, Hawkins.

Smith, Robert (3 Sept. 1905 – 8 Mar. 1935)

* Robert Smith, age nineteen, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Smith of the town of Hull, died at the agricultural student infirmary at Madison Friday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock, pneumonia being the cause of his departure. He graduated from the Colby high school two years ago, and, at the time of his death, was attending the agricultural short course at the Wisconsin college of agriculture. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church at Unity Tuesday afternoon, Rev. C. Paul Nulton officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. The pall bearers were Wayne Davis, Roland Brehm, Calvin Cook, Everett Kapes, Elred Cutts and N. Cutts.

The deceased was born September 3, 1905, in Chicago and came to the farm when a mere infant with his parents. He is survived by his parents and by two brothers, Stanley and Carl, who are employed on a fox ranch in northern Minnesota. Also an aged grand-mother, Mrs. Emima Hobbs. He completed his tenth year in 4-H club work last fall as a member of the Colby Agricultural club. He followed dairy, pig, poultry and sheep projects and carried on a farm accounting project last year. In 1930 he was the first in the stock judging contest at the Wisconsin Valley Fair and Exposition and in 1931 he was a champion poultry club member, in addition to which he won various other honors in poultry club work.


Smith, Sarah (1864 – 28 Nov. 1951)

* Mrs. Jacob Smith, 87, mother of the Rev. F. J. Smith of the Unity and Colby Methodist Churches, died at the Bethesda Rest Home in Arpin Wednesday morning. Death terminated an illness of several months.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Colby Methodist Church with the Rev. Lee Holmes, Loyal, officiating. Burial will be made in the Colby cemetery. The body will repose at the Lulloff Funeral Home, Colby, until the time of the services.

Sarah Miller was born in Tyrle County, Ireland and she came to this country when a small girl and lived in Maryland and Philadelphia. She was married to Jacob Smith on Nov. 1, 1884. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year.
