Egg Harbor Man Dies in Oil Tanker Blaze

ESCANABA , Mich. (A.P.) – Franklin Kiehnau, 60, rural Egg Harbor, was fatally injured in an explosion and fire on the 2,900-ton oil tanker Venus.

The Coast Guard said the blaze apparently broke out when one of the ship's two main engines blew up after the Venus left a terminal near Gladstone, where it had delivered 29,000 barrels of fuel oil.

Kiehnau, who worked on the ship for a little more than a year, was rushed to port aboard the Coast Guard cutter Raritan, which had been helping break a trail for the Venus through two to four feet of ice. He was dead on arrival at an Escanaba hospital.
