W. H. Allen, Menomonie. Born in the State of Maine. Removed with his parents, when nine years of age, to Lawrence, Mass., where he lived about three years, and thence to Saginaw, thence to Byron, where he enlisted August, 1861, in the 5th Regiment, Mich. V. I. He served till the close of the war, and was in active service during the whole time. He was in McClellen's Peninsula campaign, second Bull Run, battle of Gettysburg, and in Grant's final campaign of the war. After the close of the war he went to Detroit, where he remained till 1874, when he came to Menomonie and engaged with Knapp, Stout & Co. He now has charge of the land department of that firm. He was married to Helen Barber, a native of Michigan, January, 1865. They had one daughter, Grace, born Aug. 29, 1866, and died June, 1880. George Braford

Thomas J. Bryan, harness maker, Menomonie. Born in Shelby Co. Ohio, in 1830. When six years of age, his parents removed to Indiana. He learned his trade at Niles, Mich., and came to Wisconsin as early as 1856; but first settled in the State at Durand, where he was engaged in business for ten years. He came to Menomonie in May, 1875. He married Vienna A. McCarty. They have three children - Julia A., Charles H. and Earnest B. George R. Brewer, Menomonie. Is engaged with Knapp, Stout & Co. He has charge of the clothing and furnishing department, in the store of his company, at Menomonie. He was born in Canada, in 1852, and came to Menomonie in 1867, and has been constantly in the employment of the company since that time, connected with the mercantile branch of the business. His long continuance with one house is evidence of his faithfulness and ability as a business man. He has had charge of his present department for ten years. Charles Burgess was born at Palmyra, Jefferson Co., WIS Oct 1843, settled in Spring Brook in 1867, enlisted in Co. H. K. Carrington was born at Atwater, Portage Co., Ohio, April 23, 1842, enlisted at Marlboro, Ohio in the 10 Ohio Cavalry and was appointed Corporal, served under Kilpatrick, discharged July 24, 1865, married Mrs. Hattie Rogers Nov 29, 1869 [Source: "Dunn County News", Menomonie, WI, 26 May 1883 (p4, c2) - Submitted by Judy Schultz]


Fred R. Church was a prominent man, who came to Menomonie in 1854. He was Postmaster at one time, and had hosts of friends, especially among the soldiers, for whom he did a large amount of work. He had a wife and one son. They came from Iowa. He died in 1865, on Nov. 22d, and was buried with Masonic honors. [[Source: "History of Northern Wisconsin", 1881, page 282 - Sub. by Brenda W.]

W. H. Doane was born at Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vermont, July 1833, removed to New York in 1835, married Isabelle Dow in 1857, settled in Spring Brook in 1858, has held the office of Justice of the peace almost continually since 1865 [Source: "Dunn County News", Menomonie, WI, 12 May 1883 (p4, c2) - Submitted by Judy Schultz]
 

Fayette Doane was born at Richland, Oswego County, New York, March 18, 1838, immigrated to Sheboygan County, Wis, June 1855, Settled in Spring Brook in Sept 1858, enlisted in fall of 1864 in Co. Henry Grob, an estimable and public-spirited citzen, was born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1828. Came to America in 1858, and by energy and enterprise and economy, secured a fortune. He died 13th of February, 1872. [Source: "History of Northern Wisconsin" 1881, page 283 - Sub. by Brenda W.]


Dr. David Heller was born in Northumberland Co. Pa., July 20, 1810. He was married to Sarah Wilson on the 5th of January, 1836, in Salina, Clinton Co., Pa. He early learned the saddlery trade, but subsequently studied dentistry. He came to Menomonie in 1858, Mrs. Heller having been here since 1856, on a visit to her brother, Capt. Wilson. He practiced dentistry until his death, Sept. 3, 1868. He was County Treasurer for two terms, one of his sons performing the duties the second term. Job Lee Family biography



William McKahn, with his interesting family of four daughters and three sons, came from Washington, Pa., in 1857. He was employed as head clerk in the company's store. While still with the company, he procured a tract of land six miles form the city, and improved, creating a home where he lived a year. Finding farm life too arduous, he returned to the village, and for a time owned a livery stable, and for two years kept the Menomonie House. He died Oct. 10, 1872, having been confined to his room by paralysis for two years. [[Source: "History of Northern Wisconsin", 1881, page 282 - Sub. by Brenda W.]


Capt. J. M. Mott, born in Oneida Co. N.Y., Feb. 15, 1818, came to Menomonie in 1860, and was in the employ of Knapp, Stout & Co. until the war of the Rebellion, when he raised a company and was commissioned captain, going to the front and gallantly leading his men up to the time and through the battle of Gettysburg in July, 1863, when, completely exhausted, he had to relinquish his command, and soon afterward died, in Frederick, Md., at the age of forty-five. Albert Saxon was born at Bulter, Wayne County, N.Y. Jan 1848, immigrated to Wisc. and settled in Spring Brook Oct 23, 1868, married August Doane in 1877 [Source: "Dunn County News", Menomonie, WI, 26 May 1883 (p4, c2) - Submitted by Judy Schultz]
 

Fritz Paule died April 20, 1874. He was born on the Rhine, at Strausburg, in 1809. Came to America in 1838, and was an inmate of Capt. William Wilson's family for twenty-three years. CLAYTON E. ROGERS, superintendent Chippewa Lumber & Boom Co.'s mill, was born in Mt. Pleasant, Wayne Co., Pa., April 4, 1832. Lived there until he came to Madison, Wis., in 1848. After remaining there three years he removed to what is now Ontario, on the Kickapoo River, in Vernon County, where he engaged in lumbering operations. In April, 1961, he enlisted in Company I, 6th Wis. V. I. In the Fall of the same year he was promoted to second lieutenant, and the following Spring to first lieutenant. Afterwards did staff-duty with General Doubleday; later, with General Wadsworth. After the battle of Gettysburg he resigned and returned to Vernon County, where he was elected Sheriff in 1863. In the Winter of 1863-64 he raised Co. B, 50th Wis. V. I, and went to St. Louis, having command of five companies of that regiment. Soon after he was detailed for provost-marshal duty, district of Central Missouri, being stationed at Kansas City, Lexington and Warrensburg until June, 1864 when he was ordered to St. Louis and was appointed a member of the Military Court-martial. Was a member of that commission until July 5, 1866. When he left the service he returned to Wisconsin; for a short time was at Virginia; then went to Menomonee, Wis., where he had charge of Knapp, Stout & Co.'s saw-mill until about seven years ago, when he went to Wilson's Station, and, with Capt. Wilson, built a saw-mill, which was operated under the firm name of Wilson, Van Vliet & Co. (he being a member of this firm) for two years. He then went with Jacob Humbird, at Clayton, Wis., and they run it together for two years, when Mr. Rogers disposed of his interest, but continued to operate the mill until Dec. 15, 1879. Jan. 1, 1880, he became connected with the Chippewa Lumber & Boom Co., having charge of their manufacturing business. He was married in Ontario, March 13, 1856, to Emily Tuttle. She died July 12, 1868, leaving three children—Eva, Earl M. and Chester H. Mr. Rogeis present wife was Sylvia A. Sherbern, a native of the State of New York. They were married in November, 1869. They have six children—Wilshier S., Guy, Lute T., Dana, Jay H. and Clayton.



John Stavrum was born in Norway, Feb 6, 1849, immigrated to Wisc. in May 1868 and settled in Spring Brook, married A. L. Owens, Oct 25, 1870 [Source: "Dunn County News", Menomonie, WI, 26 May 1883 (p4, c2) - Submitted by Judy Schultz]
 

Pettis Tiffany died on the twenty-fifth day of January, 1873, aged eighty-nine years. He was an early settler, having come to the county in 1840. He conducted the first operations on Tiffany Creek. C. C. Tubbs was born in Scroan, Essex Co., NY, April 1, 1823, Removed to Waukesha County, 1842. Settled in Spring Brook in Spring of 1855. Married to Sarah M. Wiggins, July 1851 [Source: "Dunn County News", Menomonie, WI, 28 April 1883 (p4, c2) - Submitted by Judy Schultz]


Levi Vance, an Indian trader, and one of the early settlers of the State. He was an upright, capable man, who secured the esteem of the whole community. He built the first hotel here. He was proprietor of the Vance House and Sheriff of Dunn County at the time of his death, which occurred Sept. 22, 1864.[Source: "History of Northern Wisconsin" 1881, page 283 - Sub. by Brenda W.]

William K. West was born at Ellisburg, Jefferson Co., New York, Aug, 18, 1835, came to Sheboygan Co., WI in 1836, settled in Spring Brook, January 1861, enlisted in Co. Henry B. Wiggins was born at Freedom, Waldo County, Maine, March 15, 1825. Removed to Beloit, Wis., 1846. Settled in Spring Brook May 1855. Built a saw mill at Fall City in 1857. Joseph W. Wiggins was born in Freedom, Maine, Jan 10th 1829, removed to Dodge county, Wis. in 1843, settled in Spring Brook in spring of 1855, enlisted Sept. 3, 1864 in Co. G. , 5th Wis Inf, was in the battles of Hatch's Run, Petersburg and Sailors Creek, wounded at Sailors Creek April 6, 1865, Discharged from Carver Hospital June 29 1865, married Jennie Blodgett in May 1868.
