Brooke County, WV Cemeteries
Old Brooke Cemetery
Source: "The Echoer"
Transcribed by K. Torp
The oldest cemetery in Wellsburg was located on a hillside south of the old Brooke
Academy building. The plot on the northwest corner of Water and Fleet Streets was laid out in 1814. In 1876, the
dead were removed to another site.
On the corner west of the lots where the Regular Baptist Church stood, also was a burial ground. This property
was later owned by Samuel George; the dead were removed in 1877.
The Brooke Cemetery was purchased from George Cox in 1857. Here lies Capt. Oliver Brown, a hero of the the Revolutionary
War.
The family of Dr. Joseph Doddridge who wrote Doddridge Notes, a history of the early settlement, lies here, along
with Patrick Gass
(Lewis and Clark Expedition Member).
