Dollie Bowlings
On last Thursday, in Slab Fork District, Raleigh county, Dollie, little daughter, about 7 years old, of George Bowlings, caught her dress on fire and was burned so badly that she died, in about three hours afterwards. Eugene R. Gilkerson, 76 of Beckley died September 26, 1997 in a Charleston hospital after a short illness. He was a retired route salesman from Greenbrier Dairy with 43 years’ service, a member of Moose Lodge 1606, Beckley, and an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving: wife, Mary Williams Gilkerson; sons, Richard Wayne of Scott Depot, Gary Lynn of Hurricane, Eugene R. II of Beckley; daughter, Beverly Racer of Winfield; sisters, Jenny Wauhop of Alexandria, Va., Pauline Thewes of Arlington, Va.; brother, Trube Shaw Gilkerson II of Denver; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Robert Kelly officiating. Entombment, with military rites by VFW Post 4326, will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum 4, Prosperity. There will be no visitation. [Unknown newspaper, Submitted by Alice Horner. Truby S. Gilkerson
Funeral arrangements are pending for Truby S. Gilkerson, 75, of 132 Forest Avenue, who died at 7 a.m. Monday (January 30, 1967) in a local hospital after a long illness. A son of the late William and Molly (Pigman) Gilkerson, he was born September 2, 1891 in Moorehead, Kentucky. Gilkerson was a retired coal miner, having last worked for the New River Coal Co., a member of the First Baptist Church, American Legion Post 32 and the UMWA Local 7086, and was a veteran of World War I. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Glenna Gilkerson, at home; two sons, Eugene of Beckley and Truby Jr. of Canon, Colorado; two daughters, Mrs. James (Virginia) Wauhop and Mrs. Jack (Pauline) Thewes, both of Alexandria, Virginia; a brother, Waldo of Charleston, and seven grandchildren. The body is at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home. [From the Beckley Post-Herald newspaper, published in Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia, Tuesday, January 31, 1967 edition. Quinn Jones
Killed by Fall of Slate
Quin Jones, colored, 54 years of age, was instantly killed by being crushed under a heavy fall of slate in the Mabscott mines on Wednesday evening of last week, his neck, one arm and a leg having been broken by the weight of the slate under which he was buried. Anne E. Wadsworth
Died, Mrs. Anne Eliza WADSWORTH. the only child of James B. and Elizabeth FELTON, who was born 9 Dec. 1819, in Winton, N.C. Losing her father at an early age, she spent her youth with her mother in the city of Raleigh at the house of Mrs. WHITE, her grandmother. Her husband. Dr. WADSWORTH. and her mother survive.
