3. JAMES GADD (son of William Warwick Gadd)
James Gadd was b. in Franklin county, Virginia, 1808, and d. June 29. 1888, and is buried in Reynolds cemetery two miles northwest of Cowen, West Virginia. He married Rhoda Thornton in 1826, and the tradition is that the reason he did not move to Kentucky with his father and other members of the family was because his wife would not agree to leave her people. He acquired lands in Franklin county and lived there until about 1840, when he sold his lands and moved to Wyoming county, now West Virginia, where he purchased lands and lived until about 1870 when he moved to Webster County. They had the following children, Andrew P., Sanford, Wilson T., James Jr., Sarah A. and Harriet E.

4. HARRIET ELIZABETH GADD
(Daughter of James)
Harriet E. Gadd was born in Franklin County, Virginia, in 1835, and died in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1911. She moved to Wyoming County, West Virginia, with her parents in 1843, and was married to Alfred W. Lane on March 8, 1855. He was a widower, son of Alex Lane, of North Carolina. They had one son, Joseph Lane. Alfred W. Lane disappeared and was never heard of again. The Civil War came on and she and her mother moved to Washington County, Virginia, to be near relatives. About 1862 Harriet E. married Robert Johnson of Washington County, Virginia, and they had one son, Robert E. Lee Johnson. Robert Johnson was a soldier in the Confederate army and was killed in battle. About 1866 Harriet E. married Preston Kendrick of Washington County, and they had three daughters, Almedia, who married Frank Barber and lives at Oilton, Oklahoma; Martelia, who married Charles Pettyjohn and Amanda, who married Joseph Sharrett.

5. JOSEPH LANE (son of Harriet E. Gadd)
Joseph Lane was born in Wyoming County, West Virginia, and moved with his mother to Washington County, Virginia, as above stated, where he lived until 1893, when he moved to Missouri. There he married Louisia Barker Barbe whom he had known in Virginia and they had the following children: Cora, who married William Williams and lives at Rockville, Missouri. Fannie, who married Ed Branninger and they live at Gashland, Missouri, P. J. Lane, Phoenix, Arizona, Mary Pearl Lane, who married W. B. Cross and lives in Kansas City, Ruth Lane and John Daniel Lane also of Kansas City.

5. ROBERT E. LEE JOHNSON (son of Harriet E. Gadd)
Robert E. Lee Johnson was born in Washington County, Virginia. October 13, 1863. and died there November 18, 1930. He married Mollie E. Martin who is still living. They had the following children: Clarence C., now deceased, Minnie Lee, who married Clarence Sharrett; Delia W., who married Albert Couch; Bertha B., who married Clarence Tate; Margia, who married
Charles Cole, Robert T., Garnett M., Herbert F and Emory K.

4. JAMES GADD, Jr. (son of James)
He was born in 1829 and died 1894. He moved to Boone County, West Virginia and married Lucy Neuby. They had children: William F., Addie and Allie and three other children who died in infancy. Allie married Sim Toney and they had two children, Cecil and Bessie. Addie married Henry Belcher and they had children: Nora, Ella, Anna, Lessie, Thelma, Herbert and Robert.

5. WILLIAM F. GADD (son of James, Jr.)
He was born about 1865 and has lived in Boone County all his life. He married Hettie Snodgrass and they had one daughter, Julia, who married Jack Washburn.

4. SARAH A. GADD (Daughter of James)
She was b. March 9, 1837 and d. December 2. 1919. She married Wyatt Ballard Shannon on May 19, 1853. He was b. December 16, 1831 and d. August 19. 1900. They lived in Wyoming County, West Virginia, and he was a farmer and hotel proprietor at Oceana. They had the following children: V. B. H. Shannon, Haven R. C. Shannon and Wyatt A. C. Shannon, all of whom died in infancy. They had other chil-dren, Jasper James, Lightburn Layne, Richard Averall, Ulysses Grant, Laura Ann, Vida Bell and May. Lightburn Layne Shannon has held several official positions in Wyoming County, and his son, C. V. Shannon, was Clerk of the county court from 1935 to 1939.


4. WILSON T. GADD (son of James)
He was b. 1830 and d. in 1893. He married Alice Mullens and moved to Webster County, West Virginia, in 1872. where he was engaged in farming. They had children: Leander J., Caszander L. and Myles B.

5. LEANDER J. GADD (son of Wilson T.)
Leander J. Gadd was born September 19. 1856 and died in Webster County, West Virginia, April 16, 1934. He was a farmer and married Almira Susan Bailey and they had the following children: William W., Susan Lilly, Noah Washington, Stuart Franklin, all deceased, and Barbara Ellen, George Price and Almeda Jane, living. Barbara Ellen Gadd was born February 1, 1887, and married Manning Wright who is a merchant at Areola, West Virginia. They have a daughter, Anna M. Wright, who is a teacher in the public schools. Almeda Jane Gadd married Arch Weese and they live at Shreve, Ohio.

6. GEORGE PRICE GADD (son of Leander J.)
He was born February 15, 1897, and married Flossie Sparks and is a farmer at Marcus, WestVirginia. They have children: William D. J., Ralph Austin, Lloyd Dale and Harold Burton.

5. CASZANDER L. GADD (son of Wilson T.)
He was born in 1858 and died in 1900. He married Mary F. Weese, was a farmer and lived in Webster County. They had the following children: Rosa A., married Edward Collins. Adeline, married Henry Baker, Ella, married J. W. Clay, Harman L. and William H. all now deceased, and John W., Milton C. and Sanford S. Living.

6. JOHN W. GADD (son of Caszandcr L.)
He was born in 1885. lives at Duo, West Virginia, and is a locomotive engineer. He first married Alice McKinney and they had the following children: Earl W., deceased, Claude, Hayden and Clyde W. He then married Vera M. Whanger and they have children: Maxine, Mary and Wayne.

7. CLAUDE GADD (son of John W.)
He married Lillie Hart and they have children: Edward E.. John Paul. Billie. Clarence and Mary A.

6. MILTON C. GADD (son of Caszander L.)
He lives at Rainelle, West Virginia, and is a locomotive engineer. He married Catherine Guinn and they have children: Esther, Virginia, Pearl, James, William and Madge.

6. SANFORD S. GADD (son of Caszander L.)
He lives in Charleston. West Virginia, and is a foreman in one of the chemical plants. He married Amanda Cales and they have children: Harold, Basil, Charles and Reba.

5. MILES B. GADD (son of Wilson T.)
He was born about 1860 and lives at Cowen, West Virginia, and has been a farmer all his life. He first married Virginia Weese and they had two children : Leander D. who lives at Webster Springs and Arminta who married Henry Baker. He then married Maggie Gray and they had one son, Charles Gadd, who lives at Cowen.

4. SANFORD GADD (son of James)
Sanford Gadd was b. about 1830 and was killed at the Battle of New Market. Virginia, May 15. 1864. He first married Peninah Peters in Monroe County, West Virginia, about 1856, and they had one daughter, Sarah E. Gadd who married Andrew Kemper Harvey in Wyoming County, West Virginia, January 6, 1872, and they moved to Clay County, West Virginia. He then married Ellen Boyer in Monroe County, West Virginia, a short time before he enlisted in the army and one son was born, Andrew. Sanford Gadd and his brother Andrew P. were together in the battle of New Market, and in previous battles, and Andrew P. Gadd in relating his war experiences always referred to New Market with pathos in his voice. He related how he and his brother Sanford, on the night before the battle, were discussing the beauty of the country and the spring time, and were wondering if their wives had planted their corn, and how they were getting along, and then Sanford said. "Andrew, I have a premonition that one of us will be killed tomorrow, and I don't know which one, but this is our last night together, one of us will go tomorrow," and when the battle was over, it was Sanford that had made the supreme sacrifice.

5. ANDREW GADD (son of Sanford)
He was born in Monroe County, West Virginia, in 1863, and died at Fredericktown, Ohio, in 1936. He was first married to Georgia Ann Wickinson and they had children: Sanford Gadd, Mrs. Houston Williams, Echols Gadd and Powell Gadd, all in or near Fredericktown, Ohio, and Dennis Gadd and Mrs. Alfred Masters, Earlhurst. Virginia. Then Andrew Gadd married Alive Carr and they had children: Alfred Gadd. Fredericktown, Ohio and Mrs. Paul Carhart, Danville. Ohio, and Rosso Gadd, now deceased.

4. ANDREW POWHATAN GADD (son of James)
He was b. in Franklin County, Virginia, September 25, 1828. and moved with his father to Wyoming County, now West Virginia, in 1843, and died in Mercer County, West Virginia, on March 30, 1909. He married Delilah Ferguson on February 23, 1851, and from the date of his marriage until his death he lived on a farm near Flat Top, in Mercer County, West Virginia. He served in the Confederate Army, and was Second Lieutenant in Co. F., 151 Virginia Militia (Vol. 20, P. 265, Confederate records, Richmond). He was in the battle of Cedar Creek. New Market, Fredericksburg and other battles. His brother, Sanford Gadd, was killed in the battle of New Market. They had the following children: Electra A. Gadd, who married Adam Harvey, Milicent, who married John Cooper, Mary A. Gadd, who married Charles Sneed, Rhoda E. Gadd, who married Barnett Sneed, Victoria M. Gadd, who married Albert Bonham. and Eliza J. Gadd, who married Columbus C. Farley, Powell W. Gadd. William Harrison Gadd, Joseph B. Gadd, Andrew Jackson Gadd. and John Q. Gadd, the latter having died when he was about sixteen years of age.

5. POWELL W. GADD (son of Andrew P.)
He was b. September 15. 1853. and married Emma Martin and lived in Summers County, West Virginia. He d. about 1935. They had children: Rebecca. Mahalia. Stella. Mary. George. Clowney and Noah. Noah Gadd married a Gore and lives near Hinton, West Virginia.

5. WILLIAM HARRISON GADD (son of Andrew P.)
He was b. Feb. 17, 1855 and d. Oct. 10. 1926. He married Lurinda E. Wood in 1873 and lived on a farm near Camp Creek. Mercer County, West Virginia. They had the following children, Joseph Hayden, Andrew Elbert, Gilbert S., Isaac A., Daniel P., George and Eliza J. Eliza J. Gadd married J. Q. Farley and they live in Beckley. W. Va., and have several sons and daughters. After the death of his first wife William H. married Catherine Akers-Mooney and they had one daughter, Zanzie, who married Frank Eads.

6. JOSEPH HAYDEN GADD (son of William K)
He was b. March 7, 1875, was educated in the public schools, Athens State Normal and West Virginia University. He taught school a few years, served two terms as County Superintendent of Schools, two terms as Assistant Prosecuting Attorney and was Federal Prohibition Director for the State of West Virginia from 1923 to 1927. He was admitted to the bar in 1908 and has been actively engaged in the practice of law at Princeton, West Virginia, except for the four years he was in the government service. He was married to Minnie Dell Peters on July 27, 1898, and they have three children, Leslie E.. Cyrus H. and Ruby E.

7. LESLIE EARL GADD (son of Joseph Hayden)
He was born May 15. 1899. and married Delia Doyle in 1922 and they have one son. Leslie Earl, Jr.. born October 7, 1925. They live in Princeton. West Virginia, and he is engaged in the real estate business and his wife is Superintendent of a hospital.

7. CYRUS H. GADD (son of Joseph Hayden)
He was born October 17, 1901 and married Wayne Welton in 1928. He was admitted to the bar in 1928 and has since been actively engaged in the practice of his profession in Charleston. West Virginia. They have one daughter, Anne Welton, born May 25, 1931.

7. RUBY ELIZABETH GADD
(daughter of Joseph Hayden)
She was born March 18, 1906. and graduated at the Athens State Normal School, also studied music at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and taught school and music. She married James Marvin Marshall. October 14, 1933, and they have one son, Keith M. Marshall, born June 11, 1936. They live in Princeton, West Virginia, where her husband is employed in the clerical department of the Virginian Railway Company.

6. DANIEL PIERCE GADD (son of William H.)
Was b. July 24, 1885, married Maude Mae Meadows. April 14, 1909. lives at Beckley. West Virginia. Children: Nannie Ellen, b. March 28, 1911, William Pierce, Daniel Preston, b. March 1, 1921. Janice Joyce, b. April 29, 1923. Royal Forrest b. June 24, 1925.

7. WILLIAM PIERCE GADD (son of Daniel Pierce)
He was b. July 16, 1915, and married Lela Margaret Duffield and lives at Richwood, West Virginia. Children: William Duffield, b. February 9, 1935, and Richard Dow, b. February 20, 1938.

GEORGE GADD (son of William H.)
Was b. March 26. 1890, married Stacy Brammer and lives at Beckley, West Virginia, children: Leona Gadd-Kirk. Lillian Beatrice and Glendon. Glendon Gadd was b. February 9, 1923.

6. ANDREW ELBERT GADD (son of William H.)
Was b. 1879 and d. 1938. Married Nona Lilly and had three daughters. Edith. Marie and Juanita. He lived in Princeton, West Virginia, and was a railway conductor.

6. ISAAC AMOS GADD (son of William H.)
He was born October 8. 1886 and married Bessie Johnson and lives at Matoaka, West Virginia. They have children: May Gadd-Gartland, Lola-Gadd-Helmendollar, Ruby Gadd-Bailey, Carrie Gadd-Patterson. Iva Gadd and Isaac A. Jr., the latter having been b. February 4, 1924.

6. GILBERT S. GADD (son of William H.)
He married Saphronia Godfrey and lives in Princeton, West Virginia, where he is engaged in the real estate business. They have children: Luther Elmer, Hector, Gilbert Jr., Euna and Effie May.

5. ANDREW JACKSON GADD (son of Andrew P.)
He was b. October 6. 1869 and d. July 21. 1908. He married Mary Ann Waddell and they lived in Charleston. They had children: Lundy J., Edward H.. Pearlie H.. Earl W. and Bennie. the latter having married Frank Raines and lives at Buffalo, West Virginia.

6. LUNDY JOHN GADD (son of Andrew J.)
He was b. January 23, 1891, lives in Charleston and is fore-man of American Fork & Hoe Co. He married Vada Cart on November 27, 1912. They have three children: Violet, b. September 23, 1913, who is a student in West Virginia University. Harold Gadd, b. August 18. 1918, and is a clerk in the office of American Fork W Hoe Co., and a daughter, Rosemond Gadd.

6. EDWARD HOWARD GADD (son of Andrew J.)
He married Flora Guthrie and lives near Charleston. They have children: Howard, Joe, Jimmie and Margaret.

6. PEARLIE (PHIL) H. GADD (son of Andrew J.)
He married Louise Horton and they live in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, and have children: Ralph, Virginia, May and Phillip.

6. EARL WILLIAM GADD (son of Andrew J.)
He was b. July 22, 1901, and married Clyda Thaxton, December 30, 1922. They live in Charleston and have children: William Earl, b. March 17, 1930 and Mary Catherine, b. August 4, 1927.

5. JOSEPH B. GADD (son of Andrew P.)
He was b. July 5, 1857 and lives near Flat Top, West Virginia. He married Emma Howell and they had two daughters, Bertie, now deceased, and Zella, who married Charles Clark.
