STABBED FIVE TIMES,
A Fight Between Two West Virginia School Trustees and a Bol. Bud Man.
Special to the Register -- Charleston, W.VA, August 13 (1883)— News has reached this city from Oceana, Wyoming
county, of a serious difficulty that arose between David Lester and two school trustees, one known of Dock Perry, and the other Sohn Stewart.
It appears that Perry and Stewart expelled two of the Roberson girls from school for Imprudent conduct. At this
Lester became angry toward the trustees and attempted to settle the matter by force. Pistol in one hand and knife
in the other, he rushed into the house and aimed to shoot Stewart. The pistol failed to fire. Perry caught Lester
and prevented him from shooting Stewart. Lester then began on Perry with the knife, inflicting five serious gashes.
Sometime afterwards, application was filed before Justice Bailey for a warrant, which was refused. Justioe Shannon
was then asked for a warrant, and he also refused. On hearing of the offense, Justices L. A. Cook and Stone issued
their warrants for Lester's arrest. The Deputy Sheriff, a constable and guards, after a weeks trial, returned without
the accused. Dealer is said to be very dangerous, and swares he will die before he will be taken. Perry is improving
and it is thought will get well. It is now stated that Lester has skipped for parts unknown, and left the country.
